Well guys I just bought this 1997 junk Gen II w/152,000 miles from Rich.

http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/showthread.php?t=70515

It is equipped with the following extras:
*knock in the engine
*fuel leak from hell
*oil leak
*horrific paint
*grille is no longer chrome
*Odometer doesn't work
*neon ballast doesn't work
*exhaust sounds beautiful but the whole thing's been shifted to the right
*Someone tapped the coolant line & placed a backyard hose faucet on top!

Thanks to Jamie, those are the only issues, otherwise there would be a few more but....

Why I grabbed it from Rich?
I love it this way. The primary function of this car will be as a theft deterrent at my 85 year old grandmother's house. My grandfather passed away in 2008 & 6 months later we sold his Buick then my 93 was parked there from Oct 2009 - March 2010 during my transmission failure but afterward there has been no car parked outside her house. It looks like no one lives there so this car is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Every other day I will start the car, move it a bit just so it looks like someone used the car at some point in the last 24 hours & that's it. I visit her 3-4 times p/week anyway so now I will have yet another Mark VIII even when I'm not home & seriously? It's a clean car... It's got it's perks but it's very clean. The interior is not bad at all & there's no visual rust anywhere... well, except that ugly roof, lol.

My plans for the car?

Quite simple, scrape off all the putty from the gas tank where it's leaking (being careful I don't set off a spark, properly (spray) paint the trims to match the car, spray paint the UGLY roof to match the car, probably swap the oil for 4 quarts of 50 weight + 2 quarts of Lucas so that annoying noise goes away :D & that's it! Who knows, maybe a year down the line I decide to resurrect the Gen II!

Sand will stop a motor knock, a handful and you'll have about 1000 miles on it...then you'll need a new block...lol

Now, umm, could you please explain... is that like rubbing the sand on top of the engine to make the pain go away or have the engine ingest it so it's tummy will feel better? I knew if I posted this, someone would find the solution!!! YES! :wrench :facesjump

I don't think it's a knock. More like a bad lifter but I'm just guessing. The previous owner stated he drove the car with the mystery noise for two years with no problems. If it was a knock I would think the motor would have died already. I put at least 400 miles on it without any drivetrain problems.

It's an old "under the table" used car trick, I'm not certain exactly what happens, only thing I know, if you have a rod knock, and you put a handful of sand IN the motor, the knock will go away...but the motor WILL die shortly after...do this when heading to trade a knocking car in

if it's an ongoing knocking noise dude...my guess would be chain tentioners.. Or maybe valves...just stick your ear by the motor when running and listen to which cover is mostly noisey

When it's cold, the noise comes in when it is idling down. Then the noise continues for about 20 seconds. Then it stays quiet until you rev it. After approx 10 minutes, the original noise disappears. Then at idle, there is another faint noise that sounds like it is coming from the bottom rear of the engine. The first noise also sounds as though it is from the rear of the engine but up top someplace. However, despite all this, it idles and runs perfectly. If you were deaf you would never know anything is wrong.

Keep in mind I drove this from Jamie's shop to my house at 80 mph with the cruise set without a problem. Approx 300 miles. He didn't pay a fortune for it and can get his money back if it was parted out.

I don't know if I should congratulate you or give you my sympathies.. lol

You can congrympathy me!!! lol...

I'm not parting this car out. Since you dropped off the car yesterday I made up my mind that I cannot have it sit @ my grandma's looking this way. In my neck of the woods the junk yards have people that comb the neighborhoods looking for gems like these & start leaving ads on your windshields "WE BUY JUNK CARS! Blah, blah, blah" So, to prevent that from happening, this weekend... @ God knows what time I plan on briefly sanding the roof, give it some primer, then painting it, then painting the rear trim & the grille to match the paint of the car a well. Once that's done then it's going to it's final resting place. Regardless whether I deicide to dump $$$ on this car or not it won't be until the distant future anyway. I think it's PERFECT the way it is.

You really think it looks that bad?

NOPE! Didn't say it looks bad, do you think my 93 looks that bad? I had junk yards put flyers 4 times on my 93 while it sat parked at my grandma's for 5 months. That one however I didn't move around every couple days because... it couldn't shift into gear do to the bad tranny!

why are you gonna scrape the crap off the tank? its not a hole in the tank its ripped. that car actually runs awesome, it is a little tough on the eyes, but it runs and drives, and the hid's even work, i dont know what you paid rich for it, but i was gonna try to strike up a deal with him to get it myself and part it out, but i didnt want to try hard. i mean if it made it from holiday to ft. lauderdale that has to say something, i have bought nicer marks than that one and couldnt make it 20 miles in them to my shop!

I was planning on letting the tank empty out & scrape it off because it's leaking heavily again even though it has plenty of putty down there. I would start fresh & do it in daily layers. In other words, not slap it all at once. I want to use JB Weld. I'd let the 1st layer harden then throw a 2nd, a 3rd, so forth & so on until I'm satisfied with the amount of JB Weld I've thrown on there. lol.

At least your not all bouncy-bouncy-bouncy like I am right now... Air-ride. UGh.

I actually am very bouncy, bouncy. The front end is very stiff even though it's at normal ride height. I plan on sensor lowering the car one inch to see if it gets rid of the bouncing!

To be honest with you I thin the car has potential but it needs a SH!T load of TLC! I just painted over the rusty roof this afternoon, some of the quarter panel & I painted the grille as well. It was rough style painting but it looks way better. No more rusty looking stains & that grille was not looking pretty at all.

Not bad huh? I got outta work late but did it anyway. This weekend I'll paint the rear trim

Wow! What a difference! What did you use? It looks great.

Dude, look at the image I copied from my desk top... That's what I used. Ofcourse a sh!t load of primer first! it was a quick coat just so it can take away the ugly from the ugly duckling

Oh, by the way, look at what Advance Auto calls their Cordovan Red...

DARK TOREADOR RED!

alex dont waste your time with that gas tank trust me, it has a 2 inch long by 1/4 inch wide gash in it. that was a bandaid to get rich home. i'll give you an f-ing tank for free but either you come get it, or i'll give one to rich to take back there for you once i get it out.
and just so people know, because this thread kind of makes rich look like an ass, he doesnt sell junk, nor would he put something off on anyone without being totally honest up front, i think alex's choice of words and the way the thread reads is that he bought a pile of crap off rich and didnt know what he was buying, rich is a good friend of mine and i know the kind of guy he is and he doesnt sell crap to people, this car was a cheap beater that rich and i cleaned up after deciding that we werent going to use it for a doner motor. i have one of rich's cars at my shop with low low miles, no motor or trans, and this was gonna be the doner until i got a 97 in with alot less miles on it that we decided to use instead.
