Came across this thread, since the majority of swaps cover Gen 2's, here is one for the 1st Gen's. Now we know why the intake flowed well on 1st Gen's, so we wouldn't have to do this swap! I despise anything to do with re-wiring, extending, etc. It's just not how I do business, would like to learn but eh. :shifty:

Driller seems to be doing pretty good with it at the top N/A Marks ??? And I havn't seen any stock engine supercharged Marks that out run mine ???

Yes way more trouble than its worth on a 1st gen.

Yea, if I did go through with it, I would have a guy I know do the wiring for me.:D

Um lonnie made aton more HP with cobra intake on his 95.

Yea, he sure did, I mean you can just tell by looking at the numbers. He did state he did a couple other things to help the car out. So what would his flywheel hp be? I have tried numerous techniques, but they don't seem to add up.

That does not mean other can't top it. There has not been a real push to do so. I will be able to post before and afters in 2012. If its good for even 20 HP its worth it in N/A form.

You taking N/A or forced? Cuz you can't do much with the thin walled tubing of the stock gen1 intake.

There is work on the inlets of the tubes in the plenum to do that will make a BIG difference. You can also polish and coat the inside of the tubes believe it or not.

Boosting masks a lot of otherwise small issues. ;)

It's all about complementing the exhaust. I had Kooks manifolds and dual 2-1/2 exhaust with open mufflers when I exchanged my stock intake for the modified one. Once I was on the test ride, anything above 4000 rpms was showing a very noticeable gain.

I would be very interested in before/after dyno charts with no other mods. If I can get a solid dyno run on my current setup, I would know more if the swap would be worth contemplating.

JP, you should have gone to a short runner Cobra intake setup a long time ago. Even a modded gen 1 intake isn't good enough to feed your 5.3 built motor...

After carefully reading through the TCCoA thread... It definitely looks like a big headache. As much as I've always wanted to do it, I wouldn't come near that w/a 10 ft pole. I rather save the $ & buy a 99 SVT motor or if I really had the cash, go with the 03' Terminator set up.

No way you gain that much with an as cast cobra intake manifold. That would be equivalent to gaining 40-50 horsepower (at the wheels).

He's not joking dude. I did the same swap and we were both running low 14s last year. See our signatures now. :) My best last year was a 14.1@96.5mph Cobra intake, BAM, 13s ;) It makes a bigger difference on the Gen2s than some realize or care to know. Don't knock it til ya try it. :)

After I was all said and done I gathered up all the parts for around 600. Thats ALL the parts including EGR stuff, there is alot of pieces if you want all stock stuff and to fit nice. Its cheaper for Gen 2 guys cuz you can use your IMRC's and Throttle body and (Throttle and cruz cables ,i think)

For all you guys complaining that its 1) expensive have you priced out kooks headers for our cars and 2) hp you gain from those?? Well here, 820 bucks!! And then the hassle to put them on!(for noob)

Just another cost ref, an ONLY 2 piece TFS street heat intake for my 5.0 goes for 450 bucks thats only 2 piece upper and lower.

Or what about the 9.5 inch converter you are eyeing thats 700 bucks too.

Plus I like the "look" of the Cobra intake. LOL

In similar conditions (DA around 1200), I went from high 14.2's @ 94.xx MPH to high 13.8's @ nearly 100 MPH (99.97). My best with the stock intake was 14.037 @ 98.46 (DA -825). My Cobra intake is stock, I didn't even port match it (yet). I did however, install an Accufab TB, IMRC deletes, and 30 lb. injectors when I did the swap. Still breathing through the stock air box with a K&N filter. Nothing else was changed, same exhaust, TC, gears, and tires. Stock pulleys. You do the math. :p

I thought a good part of the gain you attributed to tuning?

I went from 13.855 @ 99.97 (6/07/2011 - DA 1464) to 13.590 @ 102.36 the next week (6/16/2011 - DA 1059) with a single change in the tune.

Then further tuning (and better air) got me down to 13.472 @ 102.33 (DA -614 into a slight headwind). Total improvement = .562 seconds and 3.87 MPH

And there's still more to come...... ;)

And may I add, I've had nothing done as far as tuning here. I just shifted at a higher rpm at the track until I get my tuning all sorted out over the winter and get a dyno tune. I've still seen an average of 4 tenths as my car stands now with a chitty chip tune.
