It's going to kill me, but after years of fighting with my Mark it has come to the point where I just cant do it anymore. I am in college and need a dependable car. I know these cars are not worth crap for trade in, but what are some tricks that I can use to get the most for her? I'm trying to trade it in on a '00 mustang GT with 90k miles.
 
Throw a couple of kilos of coke in the trunk and sell it as a package deal ;)

I really didn't expect a mustang gt with 90k to be the solution to that issue...was expecting to see focus, escort, elantra, etc.

I hope you aren't just signing up for another round of the same thing...
 
its all in how well its been maintained. my now 190k mark has only left me stranded a handful of times.
starter. trans. fuel pump. ran out of gas while the gauge said i had 3/8s of a tank.
but mostly 50k miles of honda smacking fun.
ymmv.
 
How Is an 00 Stang a more dependable car?

Personally, I wouldn't try to trade it in, a dealership is going to try to give bottom $ for a trade in. I'd suggest getting the dealers appraisal on your Mark...then go post a CL ad ...bet if you just wait a little bit, you can fetch a better price, even if its a couple hundred more
 
Go with a town car or a crown vic if you want dependable. They are cheap and last forever with minimal maintenance, and prices for parts are cheap.
 
That was the thing with the mustang. they are popular enough that the parts are not too expensive. The other half is that I want a little more sportyness. The mustang that I am looking at is in spectacular condition and only had 1 owner. It looks like a brand new car and they are only wanting 7k but im trying to talk them down to 6k. I looked up my mark on KBB and it came out to $650..
 
What's going on with the Mark to cause you to want to get rid of it and possibly have a car payment and higher insurance? Is it rusted out and just not fixable with over 200K miles?
 
You started it by making it seem like cost and reliability mattered (the college student stuff), but now you want something 'more sporty.'

It seems like you'll be buying a car you'll still have to worry about it breaking down, and it'll cost you thousands more just to acquire it.

...and if you're worried about it being reliable, what part costs are you talking about? Routine maintenance parts or customization?

It sounds like you just really want a mustang gt badly, and you'd like to convince yourself it's going to be an efficient purchase.

In that sense the reasoning sounds familiar, it's what most of us reasoned when buying our marks (they last awhile, despite all the little things) lol.

I wish you luck.

But I agree with other comments, just sell your car yourself.
 
The rust is getting bad. The engine is inconsistent, the tranny is about shot. etc, and the mustang is what I wanted from the beginning but I got the mark because it was cheap...
 
Well, this is my opinion. Apparently, your a young guy still, since your college, or who knows, you could be mature. I thought the same, and did very hard, depressing it was. Then I looked at, hey I got this car, it's paid off, it's mine, no payments except insurance, gas, and tune ups. If that doesn't convince you, then you could be making monthly payments, for no telling how long, and throwing money away at the car. Who knows, maybe down the road, it will need fixing up, and you will still be making payments on it, but what if you can't make payments, since it's broke down, and then, you won't have anything to drive. You could throw money into your Mark, and fix it up, I am sure, for a quarter of what the mustang cost.

get the gt and be happy,but you'll find that the mustang market has twice if not 10x the amount of stuff that can be done to it, let alone go wrong with it because most have been beat upon,badly. God knows i beat the $hit out of all of my stangs.'sporty' usually does not meet up with 'dependable', especially if your talking GT. if your using the mark as a trade in especially at a used car dealer it doesnt matter what you do to it they're not gonna give you 1/2 as much as you could get on your own. sounds like youve got a couple problems but at least you know what they are, you dont know what potentially could go wrong with the GT or for that matter IS wrong. life is a series of lessons, learn one here. make a choice and live with it.
 
I've been having off and on thoughts of a newer car myself.

But then I come to the realization that i'd rather have an extra $200-300 in my pocket each month not including the higher ins rates i'd have to pay.

I say stick with it till something blows, thats my plan.

I am sure that's what it comes down to, when it's decision time for everyone lol. :D
 
I've owned three Mark VIII's over the past 8 years and while they are fun and I have daily driven them before, I would not do it now. Parts are becoming much more scarce and being phased out and to be honest, 15 years of technology has made a difference in reliabilility of all makes. I have no problem having payments on my truck or my wifes new car we picked up last weekend. With my car relegated to weekend duty, if something breaks or if I want to tinker I can do It without fear. I can see why he wants a Mustang, parts are plentiful though the asking price is too much IMO.

Yeah, a trans I would do, but if the motor developed major problems it would be gone. How some of the guys on here go through motors and still throw them in is beyond me.

Transmission, $250.00 replace it and the Mark is still paid for. With a little help from a friend, it's really not that hard of a job to do.

Of course the Mustang trans won't work but there are transmissions out there for the same price. Not saying to try and get this one but they are out there. Whatever the engine problem is could be something simple to make it consistent. Once it's all up and running, keep the maintenance up on it and it should last you. As for the rust, haven't seen it or don't have a clue how bad it is. I mean, it's your money that you'll be putting out monthly, unless you have the cash to buy the Stang outright and not have a payment.

I'm just not the car payment type but when I was young, I was and I learned that having one wasn't the best move I ever made.

Love/hate thing I suppose. If your gonna build it though, build it right! :) Something I need to do, and will be doing lol. LAST TIME!!!

Because I own my own shop, and tools, and I know how to fix my car??

By the way, the first motor I bought to fix my car cost me $600 for repaying the loans some of you helped with, as well as donations..and that motor came with the rest of the car attached ..I parted that car out, and sold the old block which put me ahead

Next motor also came with the car attached-car got hit-insurance and then selling the wrecked car put me ahead again



That's how sweety...that's how

The reason I rebuild this is because I can't afford a DB9 yet. I'd never down grade to an 00 GT
