Gen 2 to Gen 1 Seat mod

Ok, I have all the pieces to get this to work, but I am going to need some help/input from some people. Many of us who own gen 1's want to put gen 2 seats in their cars. Every post has been it can't be done. That's actually not true. There's going to have to bee some electronics work needed, some cutting and splicing and soldering. Electronic schematics reading is not my strong point, as a matter of fact, I can't do it at all. What I need is someone who would be willing to read the wiring diagram for the 93/94 Mark, and the diagram for the 97/98. The connectors are clearly different, all that needs to be done, is figure out what wire does what.

why go through all the aggrivation of changing the tracks and electricals, just take the foam and skins off the gen 2 seat and put it on the gen 1 frame, then you have gen 2 seats in a gen 1 with a working track that wasnt touched! the foam and skins will swap right over.

Jamie, I don't see it as aggravation. Besides all of the tracks of gen 1 seats don't move. To me, it would be easier to figure out the electronics. This shouldn't be all to complicated. Beside, to me taking off the skins and foam was a PITA.

no i am not affraid at all, i have no reason to re-invent the wheel, its already round. if everything you want in your gen 1 is from a gen 2, why not just get rid of the gen 1 lol!!!
what you are not thinking about is the wiring in the gen 2 seat harness has wires for your auto memory position for the driverside mirror, the tilt and telescopic steering column, options the gen 1 doesnt have, go for it greg more power to you for the will to try but you will give up and say screw it, remember just like putting a gen 2 dash into a gen 1, so not worth it. being affraid, and knowing when not to put myself through such a headache are 2 different things lol!

The gen2 dash was totally plausable, I gave up on it, because removing the wiring harness was a pain, and not worth it. The seats on the other hand should be a piece of cake. The gen 1 actually has more wires going to the seats. The only thing that has to be figured out is the glide, and all of the controls. Once these are found, It's just rewire.

Great, I love the negativity. Just what I need to get it done. All I've heard is it's a PITA. Not that it's impossible. I just looked at the diagram for the 93, I just need a diagram for the connectors for the 98 now. I probably wouldn't be attempting this with my own CE, but since I have a totaled 98 Black on black, and a 93 parts car, it's my time to waste.

You're looking at this from the wrong end. You should swap the whole seat harness and all the modules from the 1st gen seat to the 2nd gen seat, with the exception of the motors. The connectors on these are the same between the two gens. You will have to wire in the electric motor for the lumbar on 2nd gen seat, since the 1st gens use a air pump.

But if swapping the dash harness was too much for you, I don't know if this is a project you should be doing. It's all very simple, just follow diagrams (sorry but that's a must) and common sense.

That's why I got six set of seats to play with and experiment with. Switching the motors are also on my experiment list. I already took the passenger seat apart. The seat looks good in there though.

Anyway, the most people tells you the truth: Control modules are TOTALLY uncompartible, Gen2 uses Multiplex Network, Gen1 does not. All 'external' features, like memory, slide back (after removing the ignition key) will not be available. Maybe, it will not start at all, due to 'no answer' on MultiplexNet. The only way to make it fully functional is to use Gen1 module with all the other stuff from Gen2.

gen one seat tracks will work in a gen 2 and vise versa no soldering required just used the wire harness off of the old track and scrap the replacements harness all the motors are the same

now the seat control are a different story if you want your gens seat controls they those have to be wired in.

I have a 95 seat track on my 98's driver side.

I am the first to say that I totally backed out of trying to wire in in the Gen 2 seats to the Gen 1 connectors. None of the connectors matched, and it was totally going to be a PITA. For some reason, I thought swapping over the skins would be a PITA, because of the hooks, that needed those hook connectors. Well I am happy to say that after I cut the hooks off the Gen 1 seats, I didn't need the hooks on the Gen 2 seats. The foam just had the velcro. The only thing I had to be careful of was removing the velcro from the foam, because since the was starting to decay and come apart., I had to remove them very carefully. Once i got them removed, everything went back together easily.

look great greg, i'm glad that in the end you got something to work out for you, but i hate to say i told you so!!! i'm not always right, but i know when something isnt worth it. reguardless now you got gen 1/gen 2 seats!!

Yea, I had it in my mind that taking the seats apart was going to be a PITA. It's a good thing to, the Gen2 plastic was falling apart.

i get that the tracks can be swapped but what do i need to tell me father to get the seat buttons working? just got a complete 93 seat off of ebay the guy says its working just going to grab track an throw the rest in storage.

Does any of the buttons on your father's seat work? Does it glide backward and forward? It may be seized up, the motor could be burned out. Changing the track could do the trick.

no i just purchased one from ebay hoping it works guy says it works.my seat does not move at all but makes the sound as if it is. The seat i bought is from a 93 so i was going to just exchange seat tracks n keep the left overs for a later day. Or maybe when i get back home see if i can get the motor working and keep it around.
