Here in the great white north we got a little snow today, between shoveling I was a little busy. I still have to clean it all up, polish the lens and plastic weld the back back on but it turned out nice. I do plan on tinting the tail lights... they are BRIGHT!
Let me know what you think.
My tail light lens has a small crack in it running down from the lock, I bought this one with a bad neon in it to cut apart. this isnt for the faint at heart.

A few hundred LED's later...

Dont mind my kid yelling in the background.

omfg dude how long did that take lol!!!!!!!!!!!!! look at all them damn led's. i think its an awesome step into producing something kick ass but if you dont figure out a way to tone down the brake light portion i can see some people behind you getting blinded by them my god those are bright!!! cant wait ti see if finished and on the car keep up the progress!

Kewl!! :D
How are you going to integrate the turn/brakes on the car (in addition to the trunk lid) into this?

My swquential box hasnt come yet, I just ran it manualy.
For the cost and time of building the sequencer for both sides to do turn and break I just bought one to do 4 lights per side for $78.
After soldering all those LED's I dont feel like doing a bread board project.

I also bought a dimmer for the tail light portion and diode isolated each section, it allows me to run the single LED as park and turn/break.
I think the brightness will be just right when I tint the lens, otherwise I'll order another dimmer and frankenstine the sequential box. (Car power to run the sequential circuit and dimmer output to power the lights)

Turn and break will run 1-2-3-4 starting with the middle of the trunk panel.
And yes Jamie, I soldered all DAY!!... but I think it was worth it.
My car is still in storage and with the 16 + inches we got today it might be a while before I get it out.

That is dam near the coolest thing I have ever seen! I've been pondering exactly the same idea for some time now. I just don't have the time right now to tackle it. That looks freakin fantastic!!!!!

i'm really excited to see the outcome because although my neon is mint, i have a perfect doner for this kind of project, the question is, would you want to do it again, cuz i know i dont want to lol!!!

That looked mighty nice......a little snow? lol, we got 18" in the cities not counting drifts..

I might be able to be talked into it again.
I want to get the back of it back on and mounted to make sure it holds up ok, I dont see why it wouldnt but I'd rather be sure before I do it for someone else.

Looks awesome but I personally hate seeing individual bulbs

The space is pretty thin, I thought about cutting 1" strips of plexi and sand blasting it to frost it over. epoxy it in where the LED's go and bore halfway through it to get the depth for the LED's. I think you would still see the individual LED's but it would give it more of a glow.
I like the way it looks now, I think I will like it better once I tint it.

I've seen a couple of gen1's with sequential lights. Led bulbs would be easier in a gen1.

can you send me a list of all the parts and where to get them so i can attempt it for my gen one i have access to a couple of extra tail sections, and would be interested in doing this to my car. any more pics would help also. thanks

If I were doing a Gen 1 car I would just swap out the bulb holders for dual element holders (from the parts store) and buy LED bulbs (no heat).
then run wires from the sequencer for the break/turn portion.
I got all of my LED's from superbrightled
http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Disp=%2Fleds.htmsequential box from webelectric
http://www.webelectricproducts.com/products.htm, if you want chase and sequential you can use the one from merit4 but I believe he quoted me like 180 for one to do 4 segments per side. They do look nice. http://www.meter4it.com/
If you go with DIY route you'll also need resistors and diodes which can be found just about anyplace as well as the formula to get the right parts for the LED's you pick. Here is a good one. http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz
Ive seen a few Gen 1's online and I think a member here has done one.
