Fuel Pump Easy Access

my question is, why do you need quick access? if you dropped the tank, put in a new pump and filter and put it all back together. why would you need to get back inside anytime soon?

Are you sure you want to be considered a tool with me? Let me know if you have any questions.

Sure. Why not. I've been called worse:D I would rather do something the easy way. If an access panel makes it easier, I'm all for it. And when I did my fuel pump, I had the car on ramps and I did it laying on the ground in my driveway since I have no garage or lift. It was a serious pain in the a$$. Especially since my tank was full when the pump died. Talk about a heavy bastard. I don't want to do that ever again if I can help it.

It's fun, ain't it?

Just remember, "Age and wisdom beats youthfulness and stupidity... every single time."

I'll be 38 in a little over a week, old enough for wisdom, young enough not to use Metamucil:D

I guess being more efficient means I'm a tool.

By your reasoning, you could have been even more efficient and just bought a new car.

I respect your opinion even if I don't agree.

This is the beauty of it... you don't have to respect my opinion. While I appreciate the sentiment, it's not necessary, since I do happen to be an expert on my own opinions. I don't care if someone "respects" them or not.

I have no access to a lift and after trying to loosen the stock fuel hoses that were seized on I decided to take a different path.

You don't need access to a lift to drop the tank.

There is a reason why some cars have fuel pump access doors from the factory and others don't.

As it's been said before, it's not like you're replacing that pump every 10K miles. Why not do it right the first time, instead of hacking up the floor board and calling it "efficiency"?

No, don't answer that question. I don't want to know. It's your car, you do as you please with it. It's your right as its owner. IT just saddens me when I see people do stuff like this in the name of "Efficiency" and "money saving".

Where does Frogman come from, name wise speaking of? Were you in the Navy or just a random name, or do you have webbed feet?

You know the trained underwater snipers that can swim to where the enemy stands on the shore and never be seen or heard and come up out of the water and peg the enemy right between the eyes? I think he's been known to put webbed feet on :) but only if he was pulling a midget on each side.

go look at is Avatar poll for a application to his fan club.

I know of his poll, but what does a application to a fan club have to do with my question?

He has to be the only dude on this forum with a fan club....give respect where respect is due. By the way thank you for your service to our country...one regret in my life is not joining military.

I apologize for making you sad.

I apologize for making you sad.

I'm not sure why, but that's pretty awesome. :D

Anyway, when I have the tank down for my own fuel pump install, I'll probably drill a pilot hole just in case I need it. After all, the more pumps in the tank, the greater the chance that one of them will fail. ;)

I can't say I have ever dealt with any rusty parts on a Mark because the 93, 94 and 95 have all been from Alabama, Atlanta, GA. and Florida. I can remove one strap bolt, loosen the other, have the hoses loose and the two plastic clips off the two hoses on the pump and the tank hanging down and ready to replace the pump within 15 min. Again, I am speaking about rust free Marks. I would almost bet money that I could drop the tank down on the pass side and replace the pump and put the tank back up in place before that hole could be cut and pump removed.

There would have to be serious reasons why I would cut a hole to access the pump. I'm not going to call him any names for doing it because we have all done stupid sh!t but I do have to say that a little more effort could have been put into this and done right.

I think you might have just called me stupid.;) I guess I'm a product of the new school thinking. Less effort for the same goal.

While you're on your back(if you don't have a lift) I'm sitting comfortably in the back.

Why is it that some vehicles have the door and others do not? Could it be so they can charge you more for labor?

I sure hope when my car is entered into Barrett Jackson they don't find out about my "hack job".:D

No, not calling you stupid, just referring to some of the stupid things all of us have done. I blew one up and burned the entire front end just from being stupid but it's said and done now. I didn't have to replace my pump but did have to replace the ring that clamps the pump down so while I was at it, I did put a 93 pump in but the car was up on stands pretty high because I was doing a 98 trans swap at the time. I had my whole exhaust, tank and all down for that but did come back and replaced the ring and swapped out pumps in less than an hour using air tools.

TransSwap001.jpg

This was before I burned the car and garage. Might not look very high but it was more than enough room for a trans swap. 2 ton stands in the rear and 4 ton stands in the front and blocks under each tire lol. I hate being under a car unless I know it's stable.

I may still cut an access panel simply because the pump I put in my '96 was a used pump that could theoretically go out at any time. I may also put one in the '97 LSC because it has 182K miles and still has the original pump. So it's also subject to die at any moment. I did one pump while laying on my back on a gravel driveway and I don't want to have to do that again. Hopefully, next time the pump goes out, the tank will be on "E" :D

Well the only one I ever did was with the left side of the car up in the snowy driveway in 10 degree weather ingesting Titanic portions of corded Ferris elements. Cutting a hole in that situation would have been ok in my book, but then again it was just a winter beater. It's not like he striped a lug nut and used a saws all to cut his wheel off.....

LOL!!

I had to use a hammer and a chisel, and a drill with a large bit once.. that was fun... but it was only on an old crappy 80's Z28 wheel... no loss.

Less effort same goal is taking it to a mechanic. It doesn't get any more effortless than that.

While you're on your back(if you don't have a lift) I'm sitting comfortably in the back.

And while you're sitting comfortably in the back, I'm sitting comfortably at home watching midget porn, because I just paid my mechanic to deal with it.

Why is it that some vehicles have the door and others do not? Could it be so they can charge you more for labor?

Right. It's all about companies making their vehicles extremely expensive in the long run, so they can drive a current customer to another brand when shopping for a new car.

Don't hold your breath on that one.

I think that cutting the floor like that would seriously effect the crush pattern integrity in the case of an accident. it would certainly make a fuel pump r&r much easier, but i dont think the saftey trade off is worth it. just a thought.

this is the only reason I don't think this is a good idea...other than that I believe it is brilliant.
