Fuel Pump Easy Access

I couldn't find much about anybody doing this project. I just used some angled aircraft tin snips to cut the hole, so no sparks were present. I did this a while ago and decided to post these pics for anybody who might have some interest. I found a 94 in the boneyard to use as my lab rat with some tin snips, digital camera, and tape measure.

I have read most of the negative replies when anybody asks about doing this. Yes it can be dangerous if you aren't careful. No I can't smell any fumes. No there is no support or structural compromise. It took about 45 minutes to complete. Walbro 255 installed with stock fuel regulator(no issues). Yes I know how to drop the tank, but why bother when this was pretty easy and I can change the pump out in the future quicker.:cool:

I marked where the fuel lines were so I could place the sheet metal screws safely.
 
This is what we do to Bronco's, 4x4's and the like. Problem lies when it comes to moisture and rust. Anytime you cut a panel, you must seal off properly with a tack sealant or tar gum, paint all disturbed areas.But I would never cut into a car like this as I would just rather drop the tank.
 
I remember seeing this done on here before, I've had the tank down a couple times now.
Not to much of a PITA to cut a hole in the floor, I did it once in a blazer that was axle deep in the mud to get to the FP wires.
 
I think that cutting the floor like that would seriously effect the crush pattern integrity in the case of an accident. it would certainly make a fuel pump r&r much easier, but i dont think the saftey trade off is worth it. just a thought.
 
I highly doubt cutting a hole and covering it will change the integrity of the chassis in an accident. By this I mean, a hit hard enough to buckle the floor there is going to crush the door, rocker, passenger long before transferring to the floor.

Also, many OEM's do this, and I think all in tank pumps should have an inspection/replace panel.
 
I understand the concern of safety and I thought about that myself. I did some research and brought my questions to a few aerospace engineers I work with(two structural). They all came up with the same answer. It would have to be a hell of an impact for anything to happen and not to worry. I plan on making a more solid plate bolted down in the near future.

I've been thinking about doing that same thing since I had to replace my fuel pump in my '96 several years ago. I did not enjoy droppnig the tank. Especially since it was full when the dam pump died:mad: If I had the time, I'd cut an access panel too. And I may when/if I ever have to replace the pump again. It would make it soooooooooooooooo much easier to replace. And personally, I think that every vehicle with an in-tank fuel pump should have an access panel from the factory.

No. I'm not a teacher. I was merely pointing out the irony of your post. Now, granted, it wasn't a grammar error, but rather a typo. Either way. I found it ironic.

I guess I'm not as smart as you if thought that it would be best to add a be in that first part of your statement as you did in the second part. Or I definitely do not get the sarcasm that you intended to show in the statement.

It is all good, as soon as I saw the others claming up, like I know he did not just say that, it was for fun. I know where you are coming from, and this is not my first rodeo on the forums. I get the same way when I see these ridiculous hi-jacks some of these threads go, leg humping and same questions asked repeatedly daily, and all the back and forth. But we see eye to eye on all those issues.

And there is plenty to do that is outside the forum that I would consider more interesting than this, but the wife is busy right now.

And being military all my young life, words are not spelled out but hashed out, no spell check needed. Not a youngster, been around on this earth awhile.

I guess being more efficient means I'm a tool.

I respect your opinion even if I don't agree. I have no access to a lift and after trying to loosen the stock fuel hoses that were seized on I decided to take a different path.
