about to j-mod my 98.... been reading over on tccoa and crownvic.net.

Also read some on this site and seems that everyone is using different springs, eliminating springs, etc.... Im just not sure what way to go.

This is what Jerry says to do on the crownvic site

Remove the bottom 1-2 accumulator spring and remove the bottom 2-3

and I am assuming leave the factory upper springs. What I am wondering is, are the 98 Mark and Crownvic springs the same?

WHO here has removed both lowers and run factory 98 uppers? How harsh is it?

DOUG - you posted that you are using the follow-

F3LY-7F284-A - Purple - Lower 1-2 Spring
F75Z-7F284-BA - Brown - Upper 1-2 Spring

WHAT are you using for your 2-3 springs?

imo, doing the jmod is great, i cant imagine leaving out the springs for a daily driver, i would think it would be too harsh, Jmod ,to me is perfect with factory springs

I did but on a fairly stock 93. It always chirped on the 1 - 2 shift. I liked it but it was a little more dangerous in the rain. And for sure it would be in snow. On my supercharged Mark we left in the spring in the lower 1 - 2 and no lower spring in the 2 - 3. I wish we would have left it out of the 1 - 2. The 2 - 3 with no spring is great.

I left out both lower springs, just did it about 4 weeks ago. I think it is great and would not put them back in. Only harsh when you really punch it then it will really snap your neck. Mine is a 98 and it will curp the tires at the 1-2 shift.

I have all of my springs in and it's staying that way. LOL All I gotta say is try notching your shift points up to around 7K rpms and saying you want to remove springs. No thank you! I lose enough rubber as is.:p

The stock spring.

If you want to feel like a bad-ass, then take the springs out.

I would rather not break parts, and still be fast, and I have both of the lower springs in mine.

Show off :D

If I crack into second gear and chirp third gear at 80 mph, I see no reason to have more of a shock to the driveline than that. And that is all motor. What happens when you add a blower to these cars and increase horsepower and torque or maybe a shot of nitrous with a huge hit on torque? Now you are intensifying that effect. It is pretty amazing to see how many Mark8 guys on here take those springs out with NO benefit to performance whatsoever and are only adding more stress to the driveline. I find it extremely pointless and destructive.

As it states in the becontrols manual you base your hole size, springs and washers on you hp numbers
The more you have the more you drill or put spacers in or if you have enough (like a supercharger)
Take out the spring.
So base you pics on your hp level.

Yes my supercharged 93 does not shift very hard in normal driving and it is not abusive at all even at full throttle. But I also suspect that the computer still has the engine management that cuts back on the shifts. I would recommend leaving out the lower 2-3 spring if your not running a tune that removes the engine management program. Now the 1-2 removal may border on abusive but can be fun if you like that kind of thing.

I'm only taking my 2-3 out completely and putting it in the lower 1-2. I don't want harsh but do want the chirp if asked for. I don't have the power to chirp tires from 2nd to 3rd and I doubt very many on here do. I'm completely stock and don't ever plan to mod anything doing with the engine.

I have done a 98 before and left out the bottom 1-2 and at lite throttle, it was noticed that there was a very good 2nd gear but at 1/2 throttle, tire chirp every time and I have some gripping tires. I left the 2-3 in and the gears engaged without hesitation with the hole drilling alone.

That is because you have a tune that eliminates the engine management program which is great but some don't have that and spring removal can help in that case if they want what you have with out a tune. I would think especially with a supercharged car that it would be better for the transmission and the drive train to leave in the engine management in the computer program and remove the lower springs, rather than the reverse, so the computer backs off the power and then the transmission is fully engaged before full power is restored. Instead of full power while it shifts and shifting slower. Mine does not shift hard in normal driving and it is just right at full throttle. I am pretty sure that is why Detroit does it that way. They just make it to soft. :)

I have all the springs in with the jmod and it barks second and chirps 3rd @ 80 mph..

Dont think it needs to shift much harder then that;)

left all springs in mine when i had it built and chirps whenever i put the pedal down. the tune was where it gets harsh. set to race settings 1-2 will chatter your teeth during regular driving. when you let off the gas and it drops into gear be it 2nd or 3rd its harsh. set to "mild" it still chirps and is comfortable with everyday traffic.

Same here LOL.

Both of you guys have 4.10 gears. With stock gears and a j-mod in my 1998 it doesn't bark anything.

I don't remember if I left any springs out. Doug might remember, he did the work. (I thought we left the lower 1-2 out??)

Anyway for my j-mod, the 1-2 shift driving slow is a little too hard and the 2-3 is about the same as it was before. Driving fast both shifts are good, but too early in RPM's, especially the 1-2. If I drag race I still have to manually shift for the best time. The only mod I have on my car is a cat-back exhaust and it has done a 14.4 with that, so it's not a slow car.

So, I don't love the j-mod in my car, but it will help my tranny last longer and the shifts can be cleaned up with a tune.

So, be aware that the j-mod will effect each car different depending on the year of the car, what gears you have, what mods you have and/or a tune if you have one.

That's odd. I had stock gears in the 94 base with the 98 trans and at WOT, 2nd gear would lay down some rubber but 1/2 throttle was just a chirp. No mods at all were done to the 94 either. Bone stock with these tires on.

BF Goodrich Pro Touring and they have good grip. Have the same tires on the 95 now. This is the trans I j-modded. 98 with 64K on it.

Wished I could have gotten it back but the scrap guys took it and that was over 2 years ago. Long gone now.

I'm pretty sure that we left the lower springs in. I have an extra SCT X3 that I can sell you if you're interested. I'll make you a tune. ;)

"Engine Management" in the stock Gen 2 tune during shifts causes far softer shifts then a Gen 1 stock tune. :(

Gotchya! I was wondering why there was a difference. Makes sense though.

I'll bet you also had a tune and the engine management program was removed.

well i picked up all gaskets and filter today and the springs will be in monday.. Got to grab some amsoil fluid also.

im also going to have 3.73s and a tune.

also... i was wondering, i just bought a 98 explorer from my sister, that my dad bought new... its got 178K miles on it with the original tranny (still running strong, knock on wood)... would it be crazy to j-mod the tranny now or just let it be..... would j-modding it maybe make it live longer or to late to gain anything.

I have a completely rebuild 96 tranny sitting on the shelve with all updates anyways.

Yes a J-mod is good for it and will extend its life unless it has never been serviced and the fluid looks bad. Then the fluid change that goes with the J-mod could cause problems. Good luck with both.

nope, fluid has been changed a few times, filters changed... has been running amsoil fluid for a long time in it.
