I've decided to clean up under the hood of the MarkVIII while its kinda apart doing some stuff. I pulled the cam covers to gasket them and also am thread-serting all 8 spark plug holes, 1 popped out, other 7 are the preventative maintenance. Doing some misc. other things too. It just seemed like a good time to unbolt things, get the leaves out, wipe down and clean up everything. Haven't really gotten to the cleaning part yet, just unbolted a good part of it. Also painting up some things to liven it up. Thought I'd share some pics of the work in progress and start a thread to post pics as it goes.

Big blocks -1966 - late 60's were the lighter blue -70s were the darker blue. 64-65 were black block with gold valve covers & air cleaners...if I remember correctly.

The windsor blocks/small blocks in the late 60s-70s were mostly this color although some of them did seem a slight shade darker. Some were the real dark blue/purple color, but I think that was mostly in the late 70s shortly after the Modified engine came out, Windsors started getting the dark paint like the Modifieds. The 351W from my brothers 77 Club Wagon Van was positively this color, he had it from just a few years old, I painted it when it went into my 76 StangII 10 years later. You can see in the second pic the valve covers weren't painted yet, and the paint color matched. Liked it ever since.

how hard was it to take off the valve coers with the engine in the car?
The MarkVIII? It was kinda a pain, lots of harnesses and vacuum lines. If you take the time to get enough of the crap out of the way before hand it helps but even then its a little of a fanagal thing. I've taken the entire vacuum harness off now and am disconnecting more wiring to make getting them back in place with scratching the crap out of them easier. It'll make cleaning the harnesses and firewalls etc easier too. One of those not hard but a PITA things.

Update

Between the Iola car show and a small family vacation I haven't had much time to work on the MarkVIII. All the thread-serts are done, most painting is done, just got to do alot of cleaning and stuff, and of coarse put back together. Did a little today, heres a few pics. I'm digging it.

Looks great:D :D
I remeber I had a 289 that was dark blue and some freinds had the hipo 289 that had the gold valve covers :D :D

The boring stuff

Cleaned up the drivers side firewall, at least to the back of the strut tower. Unbolt, clean, bolt back on, nothing to exciting. Its nice to see it all dirt free and all.
