Ugh I cant take this freakin crap.

Last week I got a dudes 2000 Grand Prix running right and replaced his struts. He also wanted me to replace his power steering line cause he thought it was leaking but it was the rack itself. I told him it needed a new one and new outer tie rods but I also told him I didnt wanna do the work cause its a royal PITA. He was quoted $900 from a few shops to do it. In the meen time he let the system run dry and the power steering pump seized and twisted the shaft out of the pump. He was in a bind so I said I would replace the rack, pump, belt and tie rods for $600 parts included.
I was cursing the whole job cause you have to pull the struts and end links and tie rods then drop the k-member..... just no fun at all. Well he calls me up today to tell me the car is real hard to turn again. I go over to check it out and as I am looking at the rack and asking him to turn the wheel I could hardly believe my eyes. The steering shaft and magnasteer part of the rack was moving from side to side! First thing I did was check to make sure I bolted it in, yup, was bolted in fine. The rack had literally ripped itself in half! It cracked through 1/4" steel and the passenger side of the rack is ripped right out of the pinion box. :nonono:
I have never seen that before. Cardone sucks. Now I have to do it all over again for free. I wish the dude would have been able to wait for me to order one from Rock Auto. :(

The two red circles should be occupying the same space. Its pulled out a couple inches.

Usually... the manufacturer has to pay the labor to reinstall their part, depending on the term of the warranty on the part.

That rack is only 5 days old. I will speak to the Manager at O'Reillys about that.

I hate working on front drive G.M. crap. Good luck with it.

The Cardone reps are good (up here at least) even though their products suz a$$! I went through 5 pumps and a few racks in one of my old cars and the rep even came over and helped install them to check it over as being done right. A+ for service, which means squat I guess if I have to go through that many parts to get good stuff (which ended up them buying from a different manufacturer!)...

the rack housing is prob just cast aluminum all it takes is for a weak spot in the housing and a pothole and bam!

had a similar problem when i worked at the dealership. cust brought in his mid 90's f150 with a autozone ps pump. we explained to him there is no warranty from us with anything. he didnt care, so i put the pump in, it built no psi......so he got a another from autozone, and paid me to swap it again, #2 built psi but only for about 2 miles (blew on the test drive). here he comes with #3 that one lasted him a day before it blew a seal and spewed ps fluid everywhere. he came back and bought a ford pump i slapped it in and no problems since. he was pissed that he didnt just buy it from us in the first place, what ever money he saved on the pump itself he lost in labor having me do the job 4 times!!!

At Advance they will credit back any of the garages for their labor on failed parts (rebuilds). Hopefully you will get the same treatment from your store.

what is that rack off of laser
Reading FTMFW!!!!!

Anywho, when I did the rack the guy also wanted me to warrenty swap out his power steering pump that was from Autozone. I told him not to get an AZ part but he insisted. Well now that the rack is back in the system still dont work cause the pumps seals failed.
If he thinks I am swapping it again for free then hes got another thing coming.
