Ugh I cant take this freakin crap.
Last week I got a dudes 2000 Grand Prix running right and replaced his struts. He also wanted me to replace his power steering line cause he thought it was leaking but it was the rack itself. I told him it needed a new one and new outer tie rods but I also told him I didnt wanna do the work cause its a royal PITA. He was quoted $900 from a few shops to do it. In the meen time he let the system run dry and the power steering pump seized and twisted the shaft out of the pump. He was in a bind so I said I would replace the rack, pump, belt and tie rods for $600 parts included.
I was cursing the whole job cause you have to pull the struts and end links and tie rods then drop the k-member..... just no fun at all. Well he calls me up today to tell me the car is real hard to turn again. I go over to check it out and as I am looking at the rack and asking him to turn the wheel I could hardly believe my eyes. The steering shaft and magnasteer part of the rack was moving from side to side! First thing I did was check to make sure I bolted it in, yup, was bolted in fine. The rack had literally ripped itself in half! It cracked through 1/4" steel and the passenger side of the rack is ripped right out of the pinion box. :nonono:
I have never seen that before. Cardone sucks. Now I have to do it all over again for free. I wish the dude would have been able to wait for me to order one from Rock Auto.
The two red circles should be occupying the same space. Its pulled out a couple inches.
