3.5 or 4" MMX Driveshaft

Dennis Reinhart told me that the 3.5" would be good enough and I'm putting 4.10's in mine

You can still hope to find a used MMx driveshaft. That's how I got one for the '96. :)

IIRC all MMX models were 3.5"

No, I called both Denny's and Dynotech, and they are not. Apparently the demand (GM and Ford) isn't there right now, so the alloy for the MMX tubing isn't being made right now.

This is why I will probably be sending my driveshaft back to dynotech for shortening.

It has nothing to do with demand from FORD, GM, or Kia.

Alcoa (the co. that made the tubing the shafts were made from) is not making the tubing anymore. Cost vs. profits and stuff like that.

Alcoa is still using the alloy in other applications though.

Think demand from auto manufacturers have anything to do with profit/cost and thus the decision to quit making the tubing?

99-00 Crown Vic Police Interceptors were the only cars that I know of to use OEM AMMC drive shafts....

wow where did this thread come from.... i bought that 4 inch about a year ago and ive been happy with it since!

Yes, yes I do. Alcoa stopped making that particular tubing about 2 years ago.

And just out of curiosity, what manufacturers used tat particular tubing for driveshafts in factory vehicles? Which models?

I don't know, I just wanted in on the being-an-a-hole party.

Dennys is about 3 weeks to get. I'm going to order one but what size should i get? I want to get the 4" but their guy mentioned that it might be tough to massage it in there. What kind of clearence issues could I expect if I get the 4" @ $541.

I plan to upgrade to 4.10 at some point. I have the LSC with 3.73!

It might hit the gas tank... which can be fixed by shimming the tank down... if you are getting 4.10's and aren't planning on doing 130+ mph runs I would just get a 3.5....

Same here. We have put 4 inch Denny's in many a Gen 2's. No reported problems to us after the install, no strange noises.

mine doesn't vibrate that much, i have the stock one. I thnk properly putting it back the way you took it off, painting the bolts and respective holes. My car has minor vibration somtinmes but it seems once i get in the high speeds i don't notice it (90+) it goes right away. I hear a descent ammount of whine from my 4.10s at certain speeds at light throttle then worry abotu vibrations.

Tires have a huge difference with vibration, when I got new tires car seemed to be flawless.
Oh yea Geno I did the break stand test my mounts are fine. I'm thinking its the Ujoints or the carrier bushings. I would like to have a lighter driveshaft to save weight and also have peace of mind that I won't break a d/s at the track.

The two piece shaft is a PILE....

The one piece honestly doesn't seem that much better. It seems like if a 2 piece starts vibrating at 80 with stock gears, a 1 piece will start vibrating at 80 with 4.10s. Might be OK for some of you guys back East where the speed limits aren't 75, but I'm going with a 4" sooner or later.

That's not becoming of you. You don't strike me as an a-hole.

Ahh I don't know if I should be proud or disappointed :p

Obviously the 4" shaft is going to be better.... but the 93 shaft is better than the two piece shaft....

I sold my '93 OEM one piece shaft to a Gen2 owner with vibration problems and it cured his vibrations.

What gears was he running? I'm not saying the 93 shaft is worthless, but if one has 4.10s or better and drives at a high rate of speed, it probably isn't gonna cut it.
