I just had my head unit replaced and when i turn off my key the radio goes off and i was wondering if there is a fix for this? I had a kenwood kdc-bt945u installed and everything works right except i lost the ability to turn off the key and have the radio stay on! Does anyone here have any idea what i need to do to get this to work again?

IIRC it will not work with an aftermarket radio. The delayed turn off is programed into the factory head unit.

ty you guys i was afraid you were going to say that i guess i will have to deal! I have another question if you guys would be nice enough to answer? On my glove box there is a extra little handle that pops open can you guys tell me what this is for?

the command for when to shut off the factor radio is carried by a data wire that aftermarket radios can not tap into

there is a wire in the passanger side C-pillar that goes to the sunroof, that also has the RAP signal (Retained Accessory Power) that i tapped into to trigger a relay to keep the radio on after the key is removed

Yeah, I'm thinking you have to tap into a wire that stays on after the key is out. I really don't know though.

IIRC it was originally designed to hang a purse on... I use it for my little tree air freshener :D

You could also hang a light grocery bag off of it. I have one in my Contour as well, confused the hell outta me for a bit.

That's the easiest way that I know to do it.

the only time i've ever used that little hook was to hang an empty bag on it for a trash bag on a long road trip.

and if any women i know hung their purse from it, it would surely get ripped clean off!

I have the 2001 V8 Sport, what should this RAP wire look like and to which wire in the back of my After Market HU should I connect it to?

I'll have to look up the factory wire color later today.

You connect it to the switched power lead to your headunit.

I have an aftermarket headunit and it stays on just like the OEM. And I don't remember attaching any wire in the C pillar?

How is it mine works this way? Perhaps the THX/NAV has this setup differently?

Yes, that's exactly it. If you had factory navigation to start with (like my 06) then the switched power wire going to it has the RAP feature. On the other hand, if you had factory non-nav, the RAP feature is built into those radios and the switched power wire going to them cuts off as soon as the key is turned off.
Since the windows also have the RAP feature, you can pick it off of the switched power wire that goes to them. When I put an aftermarket headunit in my 04, I spliced into the RAP wire running to the moonroof.

I don't like my radio staying on when the ignition is turned of. Having a 1200 watt amp it will kill my battery.

i used a relay triggered off of the acc at the radio to cut the power going to the amp when the key is turned off, that way i dont have to worry about my big kicker sucking the battery dry.

relay terminals:
86 ground
85 acc from radio harness
30 remote amp turn on from radio
87 remote amp turn on going to amp
87a no connection

I have an amp and no issues listening to music through even 2 full sittings. Not sure how long the delay is, but it seems around 10 min.

Just because you have a hungry amp, doesn't mean its pulling tons of juice. Don't need it turned up and blaring loud when you just chillin.
