I was reading over on tccoa about some doing the j-mod and putting the new springs in. I read for firm shifts you don't need the bottom spring for 1-2, and it was also said that you shouldn't need the bottom 2-3 as well.

Has anyone done this? Im' looking at doing the j-mod, and removing those springs. What are the implications to this?

TIA!

When I changed the 1-2 springs in my old 95, we left out the bottom one. That sucker still will chirp the 1-2. That's without any J-Mod, FYI.

Yes you can leave out the bottom spring and use a single spacer, but it will give very violent low speed shifts and extreme throttle shifts. This is great for showing off, but not so good for your drive line or the rest of the trans.
Along with changing the 1to2 accumulator like this, torque correction should be altered along with pressure bypass and a few other things. If your looking for tire grabbing second gear shifts do the J-mod and reuse your top spring on the bottom and order a short rate spring for the top. That will help keep a little control over part throttle shifts.

I would definitely leave out the 2-3 spring.

Leaving out the 1-2 bottom spring makes the shifts noticeably more firm, but it's not that violent a shift. Try it. If you don't like it, you can always put it back when you feel like it.

yeah leave it out and try it and if you dont like it drop the pan again and take a bath in fluid and waste the fluid too, since mercon 5 is so cheap!!!!

just buy or drill your seperator plate the way jerry shows how, do the j-mod and put the springs all back in. i just did this with blue on blue 93 in his car , installed new seperator plate and new accumulators for 1-2 and 2-3 and put the springs back in, if ford wanted them to smash 1-2 shifting and whatever else they wouldnt have put " extra parts in " i am a firm believer if the part is there, its ther e for a reason, put it back in. but then again, its your transmission so if you want to leave parts out and shorten its life by hammering shifts in it, you have that right!!

The J mod works great for quicker crisper ships, and helps the life of the trans by reducing slip. If you want tire grabbing high performance shifts go with a kit, I highly recommend Baumann's kit, it addresses all issues.

What about regular boats? Lol. (j/k)

As Jamie said, we kept the springs in mine and fitted a pre drilled plate from a guy on tccoa. I was overly excited, and ordered the 300 - 450 setting. Shifts pretty hard on 1-2, but is just 'nice' on 2-3 and 3-4 shifts.

I would keep all the springs in. My vic has one very soft spring for the 1,2 and it HAMMERS the shift every time, can't say I don't love it though.
