gen 1 sequential tail light write up

I'll be doin this for sure when I get my car back on its feet... One could always switch to an LED style bulb... LED's shouldnt put out the heat that the others do... right?
 
LEDs will work, but it will be harder to mathc up the brightness of them and they won't 'fade' into the next light like incandescent lights do, just on/off.
Heat was my big worry to with the incand lights. I asked him about the heat but he said its to cold there to know yet. Using dual element bulbs of any kind should keep the regular marker lights working as well if it's wired up right.
I'm planning on using a module from Gary at Meter4it and incandescent lights, and put it in the 'chase' sequence, as that will be the ultiumate look imho, just a lil different than normal seq lights. :)
 
OK hello! I am the guy that has the Mark VIII with the sequentials. To answer a few questions that I saw crop up...

I agree that LEDs would probably work better. I have some coming, I will report as to how well they work. I think it would give the car an updated look and I like the "snappiness" of LEDs.

Heat is not something I am overly worried about, but in any event if I like the way the LEDs look and they work well, that becomes a non issue anyway.

The system was fairly easy to install but it really does not look quite as good as the video makes it out to be. With the running lights on the outer corner lights appear to only briefly flash while using the turn signals, they just aren't on long enough for the incandescent bulbs to completely light up. That being said the overall effect still is rather nice, especially the brake lights that really light up the entire back half of the car. I would have installed the kit for this alone.

It's not a kit he put in bgch, but two modules and rewiring the rear panel lights.
I need to find a scrap rear panel to test the incandescent bulbs I want to use (I personally don't like led's.) Anyone want to send one over (or even a half one as they like to go down the middle? :) )
 
I have purchased from that same online electronic maker for my interior theatre lighting and back high-light pule. Both of which I have vids of (I think) and posted about. Very nice kits, very easy to install. Not to mention the kits are very affordable. Although if you know electronics you could make them for a fraction of the price. But I was lazy and went the kit route.

Had sequentials on my old Shelby and T-Bird back in the day. Always thought they were cool. There was a big mechanical relay pack in the trunk that controlled them originally. Glad to see Ford put them on the new Mustangs. Just noticed that the other day.
 
OK just to keep everyone informed...

Got my LEDs in, and tried to install them into the car. I got the smallest ones I could find, and while they do fit in the holes, they do NOT fit into the lights themselves. They are too deep.

If someone did some extensive modification to the tail light bar they could probably get them working, you'd have to build up the mounting holes to give more space for the LEDs, and then the trunk insulation wouldn't fit anymore. But for now I am just sticking with incandescents.
 
What style of LED did you try? I've seen quite a few different shapes of LEDs that should fit?

It was quite literally the smallest dimension ones I could find. They are a 13 LED cluster. I don't have any in front of me or I'd give you more specifics. They didn't even come close to working, though.

I'd look for others as theres lots that are smaller. Trying to find ones bright enough to match the outer lights will be the hardest part without trial and error (testing)...
 
i had the Knight Rider ballast in my old 97 Sunfire, but i made seperate chambers for each of the letters in the trunk that spell P O N T I A C in the center running lights, and used 1 bulb per chamber, looked kinda cool, no more pics of that car thou
 
Them are nice. I dont know about the drilling the holes though I dont think I could do it with screwing something up. I wish they had a plug and play set.
 
I read on the guys youtube video that doing this conversion has blown his brake light switch and caused a bad open short. So he toook the article down and removed the modules. Someone would have to figure out how to add a relay into the curcuit and pull power straight from the battery via the relay being activated by the power from the brake light switch instead of power going directly thru the brake light switch to the modules. Apparently the draw was too much for it to handle

That wouldn't be difficult to do at all.
 
ive already got a 1 gauge power wire and distribution block for stereo in trunk perfect power source. they make the sequential taillights for the mustang,i just cant remember where. but ive got gears on my next shopping list. love the look though.
 
Hey, is there any way I can get this circuit? I've been designing a sequential blinker forever, and just haven't got it quite right yet. If anybody else has already done it, I'd love to see their design!
