Does anyone know of a good company where I could order just the Steeda Underdrive Crank pulley? Everywhere I look its the whole kit. Im sure I could call Steeda and order it but Id rather go through someone like Summit Racing.

No, sorry. Summit has a March underdrive crank for $100ish that I bought before. Superb quality and about the same size as the Steeda.

I have done lots of research on this and found some bad stories or flak about that Steeda unit. Main thing was engine failure. The tiny damper can't dampen properly and leads to oil pump rattle which breaks the oil pump gears. I didn't find alot of negitive about the March one, plus its cheap price thats why i went with that one. I can dig up the article about it if you want.

I've read a lot of bad things about the steeda one and oil pumps on cobras that shift higher than 6500 rpm...

I'll put money down most of those peckerheads used an impact wrench to take off the old damper pulley and put the new one on.

The oil pump is right behind the damper pulley, separated by an inductor wheel and a couple sprockets. The pump gears are hardened steel. Imagine the impact (pun intended) on the gears when that impact wrench is hammering on the end of the crank.

Its not an impact gun thing. Its damping or lack of. The oil pump gears are powdered metal that why they always recommend aftermarket steel oil pump gears for high rpm, HP. The article also took into account user intall error. They didn't find that. The mk8 does have reasons why the stock pump can live with Steeda is 1) cast crank over stiff Cobra stel crank,2) Cobras manual trans.3)Cobras redline higher rpm MK8 lower.

To each his own... I would not recommend an impact wrench to remove or install a crank pulley on any modular motor.

I hope you didn't take from my post that I was some how saying using an impact was a good thing? 100% agreed ,not the best thing in the world.

What should you use to get the crank pulley off and on. I use a breaker bar but you know a lot of people will use a impact if its around.

Yeah I would never use the impact for it. My brother has had the steeda for a while now on his GT with no problems. The march one doesnt seem like a bad alternative at this point.

Personally I think the biggest difference between the Mark VIII and the Cobra is...

the driver. :p

I have the Steeda unit on my car...zero issues. Before I bought it I checked with a Ford engineer friend I have and he told me that the Steeda dampener was the best because they collaborated with the same company that built it for Ford. It seems like it is critical that it be tuned properly for a specific engine type....and Steeda invested major money to have the best OEM supplier in the US do it to their specs. So you know it is perfect.

No substitute for quality - that is why I bought the Steeda - and I could noot be happier !

Oh yeah? Well I got a friend of a friend of a friends uncles cousins friends brothers aunts bosses house cleaning lady thats the mother of this guy that used to know a guy that painted the Steeda building and he says you are wrong.

:D, JK

Nobody said Steeda was junk. All smaller harmonic dampener pulleys are a little less efficient then their OEM counterparts. OP just wanted another option then spending $200+ for another complete Steeda setup when all he needed was a new crank pulley.

Bringing up this old thread again :) A friend of mine is giving me his steeda pulley from his Mach 1. This will work right? When I put it on too, will I have to get a different size belt?

The ones we get are for 96-98 Cobras. Don't know 100% about the Mach1's. If its smaller dia, yes new belt. I put on a larger underdrive water pump pulley just so i could use my stock belt.

I've done these swaps with the u/d crank pulley (about 5") and the u/d water pump pulley (bigger, about 6.25"). I've used the stock length, but a slightly shorter belt usually works better (about 1.5-2" shorter).

Stock belt is 4060980 which is a 98.0" long belt.
I like to use the 4060960 which is 96.0" long belt (you see how the belt numbers work?)
I just picked up a couple 4060967 belts for a couple vehicles I'm fixin' to do swaps on.

Also, the belts I always use to avoid squeaking are the Good Year Gatorbacks. You can get them for like $12 on ebay and $17 on amazon.

I also have a spare Steeda 5" SFI u/d crank pulley here I'd let go for $75 shipped.

I might be interested in that, if you're offering it up. Got any pics?

Yes, I do. It's painted red and on the left in this pic (the March 1158 on the right I'm using - sorry):

I also remember reading somewhere that all I need is the crank pulley and not the others. why is this?

Well, because if your crank pulley is smaller, that will slow the rotation of ALL YOUR ACCESSORIES. Your engine won't have as must drag from the accessories saving some ponies (generally 5-15).

With kits, usually the water pump pulley is BIGGER making it slow even more. If the alternator pulley were bigger, it would slow more, too.

If you change just the crank pulley, you will definitely need a shorter accessory belt (I could find the exact one you will need, if you need that info).
