I'm changing my transmission fluid. It's a PITA putting the pan back on. Is black RTV ok to use to hold the gasket to the pan? What's the best way?

Does your pan not have the re-usable gasket or did you go with a new gasket? I have used the blue stuff before and it worked. Can't speak about the black but should be the same thing.
 
I had the reusabale gasket, but I am not going to use it, because the pan leaked. I am going to use this felpro gasket. I just need to make jure the 273 RTV is ok to hold the gasket to the pan.

I never used it before Greg so I really can't speak for it. I would think that if it's like the blue RTV, it should be ok. The worse that can happen is that it'll leak again. :p
 
I just recently did mine, I just got a normal paper gasket, then put the 4 corner bolts in proped up the pan. It is a PITA but I had a pit to do it in. The gasket has been holding fine and it's been a week
 
i don't remember if i used cork, or the rubbery type, but i stuck the corner bolts in, held it up, hand tightened, and then put the rest in.
the gasket held the 4 bolts in nicely.

i wouldnt put anything on the pan other than the factory style gasket or you'll be pulling the pan back off in less than a month.
 
Quality (not cheap) filters have the OEM reusable gaskets. Be careful that you don't get that RTV into the pan innards as it can clog the filter. All you need is a dab on the pan corners and let it set before you put the pan up there.

Factory gasket is by far superior to anything else out there....plus there reuseable and require no silicone of any sort and can't be over tightened and crush out like other gaskets

I praise ford and also Gm for adopting these style gaskets in the 90's it was made so it can't fail.....I had an apprentice under me throw away the gasket one time when servicing a trans and he used the gasket supplied in kit with new filter and low and behold days later back leaking after I told him if it was the solid rubber metal insert gasket to just reuse it....made him pay out of his own pocket for new gasket for blatantly not listening to me and also $75 of mercon v was also wasted
 
the transmission shop brandon's going to to ask about his trans told him to use the assembly goo (blue stuff)....but i dont know about the other stuff.
 
I got it all buttoned up. Thanks for the input. I just needed to keep the gasket in place while I started the bolts. It's a PITA doing it on your back by yourself.
 
Just for future reference, you use a gasket maker to keep the gasket in place. That is what I did when I my friends Kia.
