i would say since you are pretty much replacing every par to fht exhaust, you might as well just take it up a size while your at it, its only gonna help
 
BS backpressure does not affect torque, torque is a function of HP. Less backpressure the better. Hell run it right off the heads you will have lots of power. I havent seen any top fuel dragsters lately with necked down headers for more low end power lol.
 
^^^ Well generally every exhaust system reaches a point where too large of exhaust will cool the exhaust too fast and slow down the flow(which can increase backpressure), but in return you have a larger volume area so its usually a wash.

What experience is that? Do you have a dyno from known-good stock cats to "high flow" aftermarket ones that shows gains? One of the major issues with aftermarket cats, especially the cheap ones, is longevity. They are cheap for a reason; there are precious metals that are used in the converters that are very valuable, and there is nothing a manufacturer can do to avoid the added cost other than skimp on them.

You are right, horsepower is just a number that is derived from the torque. However, backpressure does impact the torque curve. Dyno with stock exhaust, then dyno with open headers...you will see a gain at peak, but the area under the curve will be less.
 
so it seems like 2.5" should be ok? i really dont want to lose any power, to be honest i want to gain as much as possible, as well as add a nice rumble!

It would be different if the majority of the folks around here realized it is not a cat, but unfortunately someone started the rumor and now everyone believes it...so I try to keep it from growing any more. Nothing personal against you, but your taking it personal reflects that perhaps you are a bit uptight yourself. ;)

THere are tons of others but most show an increase in diameter=an increase in power. THose little honda 4s are running 3 inch I would think a big mightly V8 can... I got 5 inch on my 5.9L straight six truck lol.
 
Backpressure is a myth, unless you are running 2 strokes that need tuned pipes. And even then its not the pressure its the speed of sound vs your reflection cone and stinger length.

Magnaflow makes ONLY 2.25 inch pipes for the LS. Anything larger must be custom made. And I have a notion that most of the so-called 'technical' advice handed-out here is simply a re-statement of something half-heard and misunderstood. Just as an example, the idea that restricting the exhaust flow will ALWAYS produce greater power at some point or other is simply hooha. If a restriction makes more power, it simply means that some other part of the powerplant is wrong and it's showing up at the 'more-power' point. Remove both restrictions and the result will be of benefit.

now im just waiting on fastls to send me a rescent link of those high-flow cats he bought so that i can order them.. i couldnt find a rescent link.
 
I did order them from there. It was the cheapest price I could find. Their shipping was awesome. Ordered on Friday and got them on Monday.
 
Last exhaust I did on a 4.6 I used 2.5 inch straight back with the smallest glasspack on each side and 3 inch stainless tips. Nice and quiet when driving around but if you leaned into it she would make some noise.

Depends were you want your power range.. having no 'back pressure' will give the range a sweet spot.. as opposed to power through the whole range.. ill find the charts after the weekend that show this..
