When I put the HIDs in my brothers car the message only came on when the autolamp feature was on. If you operate the lights manually (by physically moving the switch) then you shouldn't get a message.
 
I don't get a message, I use the auto feature, mine are plug-n-play
 
if it does come on, its not like its hard to shut off. one wire up under the dash somewhere, i don't remember where though.

if you have to use a relay with your HIDs you will get an exterior light message because the input on the relay will only take power from one headlight, not both.
i have been using aftermarket HIDs with no relay with no problems yet
 
On my friends 97, we just added a relay harness to the aftermarket HID system, and it is saying check headlamps. We used both factory headlight harnesses to trigger the relay...
 
There's no reason to use relay(s) on a Gen 2, just wire the new ballasts into the feeds for the stock ballasts at the bottom of the radiator support.
 
^with my gen 2, there was a few times in the past the lights would flicker when my air compressor came on. since then i have replaced the compressor so i think it was just getting ready to die and was pulling a ton of voltage
 
We'll just see what happens. Gen 1 and I believe it's the brown wire under the dash on the passenger side somewhere. I'll find it.

The previous owner had an HID kit in there that would flicker whenever the car was at idle (with a new alternator) and something else that consumes a lot of power was also on. They flickered pretty much any time the air compressor was on. We didn't measure the factory wiring for the headlamps, but it wasn't the 10 gauge that's feeding them now. New ballasts were installed at the same time as the relay harness, so it's impossible to say which fixed the issue, but it doesn't flicker anymore.

I don't think it hurts anything to beef up the wiring on something that draws ~10 amps per side. The "Check Headlamps" message happened the first time they were turned on, but has not reappeared since.

i have to wait till the compressors shut off, the twins pull alot (over 70 amps) but i havent had any problems with then flickering but they will dim with the stereo up and the car at idle :rolleyes:
