Other than the valve covers and intake is there any oher physical differences?
Front cover, oil pan, balancer, etc?
I have a chance to pick up a builder cheap. Absolutely nothing wrong with my 97 but this would be an easy forged internal build and make the swap go a lot quicker.

The timing cover I think is different due to the Gen1s having brackets to mount the coils, would just be bolt holes, the block and heads and oil pan are the same

Heads on a 93 have different valve springs than the 97... switch in 96 I think.
I thought it was after 93 they all got the better springs?

There are some other minor changes. The coolant tube behind the water pump is solid on the 97 and has a rubber section in the 93, there is a coolant sensor on the back of the passenger head on the heater core coupling that the second gens dont have, drivers manifold is a little different and the 97 has a rubber valley cover.

That's what I thought.

The Floridian bald one says so.....:p

i'd look for a 96 motor, you will have to change the wire harness from the exsiting motor, to the new one, and change the sensors and what not from old to new, but the heads on the 96 will have beehive springs, much better than the 93-95 which were known for valve springs breaking, possibly leading to a rocker arm falling off and having a valve get tagged and bent!!

At some point, the oil pan changed to one with thicker rails for improved NVH. Ford also improved the 'B' head design slightly (quench pad) - whether or not these were fitted to later Marks - no idea.

the beehive springs didnt go on the heads till 96 and the timing covers are the same for both gens only in 97-98 a few of the holes that were used on gen 1's arent used on gen 2

I remember reading somewhere that some of the early 93 blocks had the old Windsor 289-351 bellhousing bolt pattern. Anyone ever seen one?

I have a very early run 93 motor on a stand right now and it looks to be the same as the rest as far as mounting holes go.
