As Promised - Intake Shield Pics..

ok so i had asked for some input on my intake shield, and if it added any benefit, or if it was just a waste... it has cut the growl down by 1/2...and im uncertain if it has added any benefit to performance or to my mpg...

...im gonna ride with it for a few weeks before i decide to keep it or get rid of it... overall it came out pretty good... its aluminum sheet metal with weather stripping around the edges... let me know what you think guys



...oh, and yea i know the engine bay is in need of a cleaning...im workin on that...and yea, its the aluminum intake tube, i picked it up used for $75 and it had a few scratches, so i sanded it down to look more like the stainless steel version...besides i didnt like the chrome look under the hood anyway - it seemed "out of place" n tacky...so yea, let me know what 'ya think

I have that stock K&N one and it still growls, but it is nowhere near as nice as that one pictured.


I think maybe you need to give it more air to breathe to really get the sucking growl.

Keep the shield ... block heat better than hearing more growl ...

Think of it this way ... do you want to be like some damn tuner with a fart can ... lots of noise lack of performance. Or would you rather have better performance along with the good looks of your set up ...

if your trying to maximize MPG's, they your foot should never be in the throttle enough to hear any growl.lol

if performance is the #1 priority, then the shield it is.

you could always through some mufflers on it to get better sound

...yeamann, i think your right about the more air thing... i feel like the shield helps for speeds under 20mph, but anything over that it actually works as an impedance b/c the air is moving so much under there [the hood] at speeds of 40mph+ that there is no way that the hot air from the engine could have a negative effect.. the goddamn thing cost $35 in materials, so im not gonna be so quick to get rid of it.... i might be crazy but i also feel that the shield cuts down the performance just a tad, but maybe its just because its quieter... idk, im def. over-analyzing the whole 3.5 horses i gain with the intake haha

I'd take that set up on mine. Looks pretty good. Have you thought about painting the tube and heat shield black? I used some high temp black on the intake for my truck, and it blends in quite well. I'm also with mespock about keeping the hot out.

To get the greatest benefit, you should create a duct of flex-type tubing from the underside of your box down to the grille area. This will insure the delivery of cool air to the filter. Your box is now just keeping the hot under-hood air from being picked up without giving an alternative source.

Looks clean, good job on it. I have the k&n heat shield and mines growls. I dont know how it would growl without it, but how it is now seems great

You should measure it up and post the dimensions so all of us cheap-o's can duplicate the process!

+1 on what darkshadow said, i would make this but i'm too lazy to figure out the dimensions myself, if i had a template i'd definetly make 1 though.

haha...ok guys, ill post the dimensions in a few days, just gotta give me some time to take the damn thing out and measure it. I actually got the original idea and a bunch of the dimensions form this cardomain member.

I modified his original template a little bit, but it gave me an excellent place to start. His template would work great for the stock intake pipe, but it needed a few tweaks to accommodate the aftermarket pipe. Like i said, gimme a lil bit and ill post some pics n dimensions of mine - if your too impatient, start with his and modify it yourself


...here are his dimensions...everything from the 11 3/4" dimension to the left basically stays the same, its everything on the right that changes...
