Same paint done this roof and no wet sanding the paint. I didn't wet sand until the clear had all cured for around 5 days. 2000 grit, 1500 would be the lowest I would use. Mine turned out slick.

man I had it sanded to the orignial primer with some steel showing, cleaned it up good and primed it good, Let primer stand all day, sanded primer lightly with 600 cleaned up good and paint seemed not to flow on it at all and seemed gritty

I bet I put 10 coats on it, and wet sanded with 800 between 8-9 just seemed like I could not get it to cover evenly

Because of the low pressure in the cans, you have to be quick. after you have one side done, run over to the other side and have something ready to stand on so you can reach on top without any problems and be quick again to finish out each coat. Cover, slow strokes but don't play around, keep it moving. Wait 10 to 15 minutes and do it again. There could be other factors like humidity, temp or how far away you were holding the can. That stuff dries quick (almost as fast as it hits the car) so put it to it. Remember, it's flat so don't worry so much about runs. Just get a good cover and have something on both sides to stand on. There is no time for moving things around.
 
your results are due to insane humidity jeff. its way too humid to be rattle cannin the roof. your results will be the same until the humidity drops.
 
That goes for engine sounds too. Now I don't have that paint job anymore lol. You can make the paint look good but wait for the humidity to drop down and with the low pressure, you have to move your ass and finish each coat out where you left off. The clear will lay a little better but it's not easy either.

try warming the can in very warm/not hot water for about 5 mins,flows much better with more pressure,still work fast with it though
 
clear dries faster when it's humid out, but will cure more slowly

Yes Jamie is right humidity too high,can you go out and rent a compressor? paint stores have chemicals to aid when the humidity is high.but you need a spray gun and compressor.try giving it more time to dry between coats.you can get rid of the zebra stripes by shooting your last couple of coats at more of a distance,try about 15 to 20 inches away instead of 6-8. we do this on metallics to keep them from looking blotched . just a suggestion.
 
so with what I have now. I was thinking leave the garage door down, leave the door to the house open (air conditioned) till this weekend,

Sand down the mess I got with 600 pretty hard (but not to back to the primer?) then lightly sand with 800. And try again Sat morning?

i would go to finishmaster and get some ebony black basecoat put into some aerosol cans and do it that way instead of acrylic crap from autozone. use real car paint, its not expensive. you can just wet sand what you already have painted, with a 400grit and spray bottle of water, get it nice and smooth again and spray real base coat over it. i'm not sure whats out near you for autobody stores, here are the finish masters around here.

also, i like to use pasco autobody supply on grand blvd near perrine ranch, jim is super good to me and his prices kick ass.
 
Well, Today Saturday, after 5 days leaving the garage door down and the house door open with a fan blowing in the air conditioning, I wet sanded my mess with 800 2 times,
Got the spray bombs (2), warm today, and shot abe again. It is going to have to do.
Really seemed like some areas were sucking down more paint than others. Put both cans on in 2 coats. Thinking about wet sanding with 2000 and clear the dang thing.

You must have some high humidity down there for this to be so complicated and if it is that high, it's going to take a while for that paint to cure to work with. Of course I did do mine in October, when it wasn't hot and humid and that did make a difference. I done the rear bumper cover in November and that paint laid even better. I didn't warm cans up. I kept them in house at room temp and painted in the garage at around 60 to 65 degrees and it was around 40 to 50 outside with maybe 10% humidity, if that much.
 
I have no idea what it turned out so shiiiity. I as sooo anal about sanding it. I think I will need to sand the whole thing down and start over :(
