Hey guys,
Dont know what came over me this weekend, got sick of looking at the cancer (clear coat erroding, black paing) the roof had them like racing strips from window to sunroof 10" wide. Well have been trying to save up for a paint job, but no luck always something happens that eats the money. So I got my sander out, ground the whole roofs clear off with 180, Then 320, Then 600. That is were it at now.

Did not get to the metal anyware. I have no choice but to spray bomb it. So my question to ya all is

from here (pic sanded to 600)
and will the different levels show in the paint

what would you do?

I was thinking wet sand down to 1500, put 2 coats of paint on wet sand to 2000, 2 more coats then clear?

no, you are better of imho to sand down with 320, then with matched paint.....do not buy cheap :q:q:q:q, go to your local A.P.S. and buy some nice stuff, 2 stage. Do two coats of the black, then roughly 6-8 coats of clear coat then wet sand with 1500 then wet sand with 2000. Make sure your clear is dry, otherwise it will look like ass. after sanding use some mcgwuires wax and wax the piss out of it till it is shiny. oh and by the way when i buy paint it is usually 25 bucks for the mix and about 30 for the clear coat. very worth it tho, always better to do it right the first time

But I do not have an air compressor big enough to run a gun that is why I have to spray bomb it.

I have it sanded not down to 600 and it still looks like it has ruts in it.

if it is not smooth, anything you spray over it will show the layers. you have to sand all of it off. if you go to bare metal you'll need some primer before paint, but you cant leave it like that. sand it with 220 until you get the whole thing smooth even if that means hitting bare metal.

Do it right or dont do it at all. I do have to disagree with you on the clear though danny. If you were to use a paint gun 2-3 coats of clear is MORE than enough buildup to wetsand and buff.

You can also buy 2 stage paint and have an autobody supply shop put it into an aresol can. Just make sure you use decent clear, not the cheap stuff.

My whole thing was talking about a paint can, imho it is hard to spray an even layer with aerosol so just spray a few more coats and wet sand a little more than you have to, but everyone got there own ways, also i have never painted a bigger peice like a roof, mainly trim peices, so that was just my 3 cents

Thanks guys I knew you could help Jamie as always your the bomb wish I could have you do it but I got like 50.00 in my check book and dont get paid till a week from this wednesday

i have a pint of ebony black too, i bought it for a project for another member on here that i need to get done soon, if i have enough left over to paint the roof, which i should, i'll spray it and clear it cheap, but you finish sanding it and have it ready or my price goes up, and after derrik's car, i dont think anyone wants me to do anything for them for awhile unless they have TRUMP MONEY!!! no more deals from jamie!

If the whole car was eventually going to need painted, I'd use NoLimit's method for the time being...

you're going to need to prime it and block it most likely to get the ruts out. You have skipped to many grits when sanding as well. Generally you don't want to skip more than 100 grit at a time or you won't smooth out the deeper scratch and it will show up later.

hell, just get out your paint roller.

a small compressor would do that roof. You should be spraying somewhere around 25-30psi and waiting 5-10 min between coats anyway. The compressor should build itself up in between.
