Can I remove the 3rd cat, replace it with dual 2 1/2 inch inlet and 4 inch single outlet Y pipe, run single 4 inch pipe back into stock tail pipes without mufflers? Would the performance be close to a dual system?

No. You can run that but you would be just as good by cutting off your mufflers you have on there now and it wouldn't look "hillbilly". I'm just trying to imagine how that would sound with 4" pipe and no mufflers without a 3rd cat.

Chop it off just past the high flow cats. Install an X-pipe to equalize the exhaust pressure. You might even consider two X-pipes and then run from there, out to a set of mufflers of your choice.

OR

Chop off just past the high flow cats and run the two pipes down to a Magnaflow dual in and dual out and then out the rear with or without mufflers. Go by the sound that you like but 4" pipe on a Mark, especially being involved with a Y, I don't think I would do that. But that's just me!

I know from experience, if you don't cross the system, you're going to lose power, I deleted my 3rd, no x , went dual pipes, from front cats to mufflers, sounded like a hay hauler and had a flappy noise, went back and stuck 1 cheap X in it, sounds great and lots of power, I have Raven mufflers which are the FlowMaster D-40 pattent copy
if you use 2 X's , that will just make it quieter
I'm running 2.5 pipes

I was talking about running the two cats into y pipe into single 4 inch pipe back into rear duals no mufflers. Do you have a sound clip of your car?

4" pipe huh? Like hitting stuff on the road much do ya?

I could see mixing them up since they are so close to each other in teh alphabet.

man so many nice set ups and you wanna do that i did the basics 2 in 2 out magnaflow and 2.5 pipes with blow masters i mean flowmasters 40 deltas and it sounds good not too loud when crussing but awesome when the pedal is down plus it looks great from the back you can really notice the exhaust lol.

my buddy was gonna due his exhaust in his tbird so i got him an x pipe and he did it 2.5 back no mufflers and it sound pretty good, a bit loud but good so really man search for that sound ,i personally didnt want it to be lound so. i also had a chance to hear (genos) car and its actually quieter than mine i couldnt belive it two x pipes plus his mufflers, i guess the idea of having two x pipes not only will give you the xtra power but makes it quieter and his mufflers of course. just mine .2 cents.

i have posted the video a few times already...and what you want to do with a 4inch pipe is pointless....on my old 97 Tbird, i deleted 3rd cat went dual 2.5 into a single 3inch magnaflow muffler back out to another 3inch to dual 2.5 inch tail pipes, it sounded decent, but my mark viii with true duals 3rd cat deleted single xpipe, and flowmaster 40's sounds alot better...not quite as loud but alot better

This is almost exactly what I am running on my car now. I installed headers and have two 2.5 pipes into a Y that goes to 3" into a 40 flowmaster. It will work fine. Hard to say what it will sound like if you are still running your front cats... it might not be that loud?? My car has no cats and is loud as HE!! with only one tail pipe. Sounds like a bad A$$ mustang with offroad pipes. i would say go for it.

Good luck trying to bend three inch that much without creasing it. It is doable, but hard, and time consuming, and will cost you.

A good exhaust guy will tell you that you only need to step up the pipe size by a 1/4 inch. A half inch at the most. A good flow through muffler [not a flowmaster] and the removal of the 3rd cat and resonator will benefit you.

Benefit what are you talkin bout power or sound. As far as power I cannt see much gains being had with the stock manifolds still in place.

Our stock manifolds actually flow quite well. And if you are not using a power adder it is not necessary. And going to far with size will decrease power. All of the benefits will be in the 1/4 inch to half inch larger, and sound will be the biproduct of a good muffler, pipe, and crossover arrangement.

Exhaust set up

Thanks guys. I am changing the transmission and I have all this stuff down, I want to do everything I can while it's on jack stands. There is a guy on this web site and youtube that has a 1998 pearl white mark with brown Moda wheels... I love the way his car sounds. His profile name is isaiah3g, do any of you know him?
