Ok, how the hell do you turn the headlights on? Mine will only come on automatically, not by turning on the switch. I have always just used the auto lamps, but it was raining yesterday and I couldn't get the headlights to come on.

Turning the headlight switch to the full on position is supposed to cancel the Autolamp function.

You could try turning the Autolamp thumbwheel to off, then try turning on with the main switch?

There's a headlight switch.
To the left of the instruments.
And you can adjust the autolamp feature and light duration with the controls next to it.

This seems like one of those questions that are too easy-
like you left something out of the question.

Unless he has been doing what we said and the lights aren't coming on because the headlight switch circuit breaker has tripped? (mind, I'm just taking shots in the dark)

I told you it was a retard question :D But yes, I have tried turning on the switch. I thought that turning on the switch would override the auto function, but no dice.
Turning the switch on turns on marker and instrument lights, but no headlights. I have tried it with the thumb wheel in the on, off and every position and no headlights.

Turn the autolamp off and pull the headlight switch out. See if theres power at the red/yellow wire with the switch in the on postion. If not the switch isn't working anymore if the autolamps work...

The red/yellow wire comes from both the headlight switch and the autolamp relay to the headlights so it could work with just the switch or relay broken...

I might have dreamed this. But, I reckon I saw a recall or TSB a long time ago to do with early Mark VIII headlight switches being faulty.

Hmm... I've been taking all of those switch panels I can find out of salvage cars and stock piling them. Mine have gone bad 3 times in my 93

I thought I attached this with my last reply, guess it didn't work.
Here's a page to test the switch from the manual:

these and alot of ford headlight switches from the same era had problems with the switch and the connector melting, pull the switch and inspect would be my next step. remember fire bad.

This is a little off topic but both Marks ive had wouldnt turn on the dash lights when I turn on the headlights unless the car thought it was dark enough out. I see the first gens dont do that though. Is everyones 2nd gen like that? If its bright out and I turn my headlights on if I want the dash lights on too I have to throw a towel over the light sensor on the dash.

My 2nd gen is like that laser. The caddy cts I rented last week also does it but you can adjust the brightness.

you guys are crazy!!

1st gen's did not come with headlights.........

except for the 95 lsc's
:D

yeah kinda like headnotsomuchlights :D
but i am working on my karma. and i need to go to pullapart tomorrow anyway. there are 2 mk8's in there if you want i will pull the switches and you pay shipping. i will send one for free. but remember these things are like drugs the second is gonna cost u.

remember pay it forward. carguys are the coolest!!!!! it will come back to you i promise

yup its normal on a gen 2, sadly i wired the trigger for my fog lights to the dash lights, so they only come on when its dark out like auto fogs lol
