Found a local guy who does installs on the side. Was a Ford tech for a long time, and has a few mustangs he is building. Dropped the car off this morning, and drove off about an hour ago. I got to his place early, and helped him put the exhaust back on and a couple other final things. The o2 sensor above the passenger cat is a biotch.

While under there, I noticed I have an aluminum driveshaft! :D SO someone put one in at some point in it's life. I wasn't able to pick one up in time, and had planned on buying one tomorrow and swapping it in. So I saved some cash, and time.

So far my break in period was the 30 min drive home. So I am going to head out in about an hour to do they 45 min break in. Can't wait to actually be able to get on it, since I only did 50mph max, the whole way home.

Total Cost.
Gears- $75 new
T-Lok- $50 used, low mileage
Install kit $117 shipped from Max
Gear Install- $100

So total cost, was $337. :p , not having to buy a driveshaft...priceless.

Hey,

Give me a call,

I'm gonna be working on the 94's engine swap tonight after 8:00. Your welcome to come down and chat for a bit.

The stock driveshaft, the upper one in the picture, is aluminum.

Yeah Mike told me, these came stock with aluminum. Thought they all had the steel 2 piece like the other MN12's. Should have known my luck wouldn't have been that good.

On the plus side, finally got to test the gears out, now that they are broken in...4.10's were definitely the way to go.

The jury is still out on that.. you MIGHT get lucky and not need one.

My 95 w/373's needed a shaft after the gear install...but the vibes didn't start showing up until right at 75MPH and got progressively worse up to 100 and down right scary at speeds above 100.

The 93 shaft I have is good for 100 mph.
Anything after that the shakedown starts.

Mine vibes at 65mph, it is slight but there. Think I will do a 93 unit for now, until I got the cash for a 4". I ran a 93 unit in my T-Bird with 3.73's and it was solid up to 120+.

I put the 93 shaft into my 95 and it was seamless up until around 120-130ish..

Why are they vibrating. They should be balanced correctlys tock regaurdless of what year or what gears are in the rear end.
I know the 93 shaft is solid and that should make it stronger but why would it be balanced better.
Also since I plan on doing this at some point. there is a 93 in my junk yard, should I grab the shaft or have a shop I know make one? If I do grab the 93 shaft can't I just take it in and have it balanced, would that make it as good as an aftermarket shaft or are the aftermarkets a larger diameter?
Be patient with me, Im not understanding the differences here.

The "tube in a tube" design is what causes the two piece to vibrate when one of the tube slips inside the other tube.

the one piece vibrate at higher speeds because they are rotating at a much higher speed at the same MPH than they were with stock gears.

Someone can correct me, since I am not sure if I remember right.

Driveshafts are balanced, for example, I took mine to 120 last week before it started vibrating. Most cars don't have high speed balanced shafts. The 2 piece designs expand at higher speeds and create vibes.

The reason it happens at lower speeds with different gears, is the result of it spinning faster, due to the gears.

Yes you should grab that 93 unit, most guys have good luck with them running deeper gears.

Edit: Tommy beat me.

Good deal mang! We did my gears yesterday too. Started at 10am and finnished around 2am the next day. I put the 93 shaft in but think my 98 was better balenced. Not sure yet if I will have the 93 shaft balenced or just get a real one. Love teh gears though. :D

That makes sence. Now whats the option for an aftermarket setup and cost. How would one get a 93 shaft improved. I know a guy that makes shafts but i have no idea what a fair price would be for one.
