Mike, the thing people often overlook when they "raise the bs flag" on someone elses mileage claims.. is.. the actual type of terrain the vehile is operated in.

Colorado, up and down mountains in "thin air" isn't gonna be the same as travelling down the road at near sea level in Texas.

And.. more than terrain is driving habits.

I was suprised at how little pedal effort was needed to change speeds on the hiway.. but.. you can bet 99% of the people push the gas pedal far enough to either "unlock the TC" or to downshift out of 4th. Neither of those scenario's will net you "very good gas mileage".

Terrain and driving habits probably effect mileage more than new or old spark plugs or state of tune on the car.. IMHO

When the car is out here at an average of 6500 feet above sea level, I'm lucky to average 20 with the mountain driving I do. On my trips back to Illinois, running out State highway 94 to I-70, I can get High 29's and on 3 seperate occasions hit low 30.X's


Keep in mind this is running 3.07's and a .62:1 overdrive ratio on a T-45.

I'm thinking that 20's in the mountains are pretty damned good.

That t45 probably has alot less parasitic losses/drag compared to a 4r70w with a postive displacement fluid pump.

probably helps with your highway mileage as well.

IMHO your mileage is stellar considering the environment you operate in.
 
well, "mountian" driving is a bit overkill. My normal driving routes are either up I-25 which is pretty flat, or city driving. The mountian driving comes in on the weekends when I go for a drive, or something like that. Colorado Springs it's self is pretty much on a plain. In 20 minutes you can be in the mountians.
 
My summer daily driver gets about 13 mpg.
But who cares!!!

my father drove me to school in a nearly same color brand new 70 mach 1
my step mother had a same color 69 mach 1 deluxe.

Those are some really fine cars. you 69 is very nice
 
Yep, you guys are correct indeed. Even though the EPA estimated fuel mileage was 24 highway that's just total BS! In the real world these 4,000 lb vehicles get anywhere from 30-50 MPG.

Thanks for "schooling" me on the actual fuel mileage of the Mark VIII's. My friend will be selling his soon & we will put this accurate MPG info in the listing. We may even decide to say that it's right there with the little hybrids. Heck Mark VIII's get 540 miles per tank! That's incredible. You know 30mpg x 18 gallons.
 
My gen 1's get around 30 mpg quite often. The conditions have to be right though. It's usually in summer, long cruise, no wind, relativley smooth roads, cruise control set around 5 mph above the limit etc.

I've checked the message centers vs the pump calculations (which can be inaccurate also) and have found the message center to be correct, or up to 1.5 miles per gallon off.

I don't bother with the average or city mpg because there are too many variables.

Here is a photo I took after a trip to Carlisle. Remember, you need to get good mileage for a while to see these numbers:
