The infamous MPG question

I dont get this - On my 97 i get between 13-16 mpg, at best, ever.

Now granted, most of my trips are less then 10-20 miles, all accesories, heat, etc on, its cold in jersey.

I seafoamed it, have brand new motorcraft platinum plugs, new coil boots, k & n, new pcv valve, new fuel filter, etc... and 60,000 miles on the clock

The girlfriends 98 has 72,000 miles, no tuneup whatsoever from what i can tell on it, and gets 18 mpg all day long

WTF

I mean yeh, im constantly in the throttle...but so is she and granted i have an lsc she doesnt, but still.

Hmmm... sounds like either a case of limping around with your lead foot... OR .... Some issue like O2's or the MAF being screwy.

It would be awesome if you had an xcal2 or another data logging type of device so we could see what was going on.

Yah got me as well, it runs, drives, idles like new and has no codes (or at least last time i got it checked 3 months ago or so)

*shrug*

I would blame it on my foot, but she drives the same car probably harder then i do, lol

Maybe i should calculate my actual mileage the old fashioned way and see what i come up with.

Lux, your sounds about right for your driving habits.

i "can" make the car get really crappy gas mileage too!

try using your instant mpg setting to use the least amount of pedal required to get the car moving.
There IS other throttle settings besides WOT..and every stop light is not a starting line.

if you concentrated on your driving habits (as you admit) for one month.. I almost guarantee your low mid teens would turn easily into low 20's.

My daily commute is something stupid like 12 miles and over the course of a week.. the best I can get at the end of the week is proably 19ish...

you just need to install the "driver mod" (joking smile)

lol you guys are great

i love your posts xlr

I may just have to do that

What?!? Thats news to me. My saying always went -

"My sh!t has two speeds - idle and wide the f*ck open, that space in the middle is for bitches." :D

Icarus what MPG do you get cruising on the freeway at 70ish?
I've never figured it out the old way, but go from the trip computer. Most of my trips are like Lux, short and quick, plus I've got a remote starter that doesn't help the reading any. My readings when the car was stock were about the same as his, a tiny bit less.
I've got a Speed-Cal in to fix the speedo/VSS, but I have been told the trip computer may still not tell me the correct reading (I can't see this being right though as the only speed input to the PCM is through the VSS on a first gen.)
So, I think it's fairly close still (no worse off than when the car was stock in accuracy.) It's taken a ~3-4mpg hit from what it read stock and the way I drive (see below ;) )

with 430's it's not about Miles per Gallon, it's about Miles per Grins!
True :D

Like I said... I don't really care... just curious...

I'm getting my gears installed this weekend!!!! win!!!!

I used to think that same way.. then by chance.. out of the blue.
I went to the dragstip..and kept going to the dragstrip.

it didn't take me very long to realize that, that cool little 1-2 second tire spin on launch = your car ran SLOW AS CRAP.
Even little slips on the start caused large very large hits in ET.

All off a sudden, faced with this data.
It made me feel like a fool, spinning out and punching it from stop lights.

I might drive aggresively at times, but taking the car to the track really REALLY affected my daily driving everyday habits.

you should give it a shot...it's alot more fun actually once you get your feet good and wet.

Lol...

I'm getting my 4.30 gears installed in my spare carrier.... which will go under my bed next to the bed pan....

I've got a lot waiting to go on my car for next year... but I do want to get some baseline numbers for my car on the dyno and at the track before I do anything that isn't easily removable like the tune.

My Vortec 5.7 is averaging 9.5 mpg in town. about 15 on the open road.

Diesel swap is comming soon to help those numbers.

My 94 5 speed VIII, will return 30 regularly on a long road trip.

There is no way in hell that a Mark VIII can get an average of close to 30 mpg. I know that people have claimed it & it's pure BS. These cars were rated somewhere near 17/24 when new. driving down the freeway & taking a pic of the message center doesn't count. What counts is when you fill your tank & average it out.
