as the title says, me and my buds will be going tomorrow night, and we will all be testing new mods (me the tune and X). what are your predictions? im probably looking at 1500+ DAs so nothing too blazing. Also i always hear talk of 'flashing the converter off idle'. What is that exactly and how do you pull it off? I want good times tomorrow and to make the best of my time there
 
flashing the converter is launching off idle. don't powerbrake it. floor it when you see the third yellow light.

thats kinda the gist of it from what ive heard. I was meaning to ask, how do you like your tune from BOC?
 
the 1-2 shift is a bit stiff at low throttle, but everything else is good.
the thing that it does where it shuts off the fuel injectors after coasting for awhile is a little annoying, because occasionally at low speeds, it turns off and right back on real quick. weird.
everything else is good though.
acceptable shift pattern, quick down shifts, and it runs great. fuel economy dropped a little though. (:D)

mine shifts very stock like at partial throttle, id imagine yours shifts hard because of the jmod. mine doesnt shut off the injectors, thats weird. Also since i put it in it will do this weird low rpm surge thing while coasting down in 3rd gear, really pretty odd, but snaps out of it immediately. Maybe thats what your talking about. my mileage has dropped too, though ive been 'testing' it quite judiciously :lol:

Yes, that is likely it entering coasting fuel shutoff. There are a number of parameters that can be tweaked to make it less noticeable, or to turn it off completely.

Plus don't worry too much about ET.
Stage the same, learn the tree try to get your R/T consistently low as possible.
Run it red if you have to...find the tree.
Enjoy the 60ft :)
 
Well things aren't looking promising. Been raining all day. hoping it clears up and cools down
 
You can't really effectively "flash" a stock converter because they are too tight. It is NOT the same thing as launching off idle. Don't confuse the two and don't bother trying it either until you get a loose stall converter. Good luck man!!:)

So if your not spost launch off idle and not powerbrake, how do you launch a stock converter car?
 
Just hold the brake and keep the rpms where ever you feel comfortable. somewhere between 1000-1500 would be good, pre-stage, stage and when you see the third yellow come on release the brake and punch it. Once you get to know your cars reaction time you can leave either a little earlier or a little later. Try to just barley light up the the lower stage bulbs as apposed to rolling to deep. Getting the tree down is a matter of seat time and practice. My 16 yo son routinely cuts 005-030 lights and this is his first season racing my 90 mustang.

I never said anything about not launching off idle. As a matter of fact I suggest it! ;) I was talking about flashing your torque converter which as a refresher is going WOT with the brake applied and letting off the brake all in a very quick motion on the last amber. The concept behind flashing the converter is to do this all very quickly before the converter has the chance to preload. A stock converter is going to preload pretty much instantly which defeats the purpose of flashing so there is no sense in trying to flash a stock converter which won't effectively do it.

Either launch it off idle or give it a couple hundred rpms.

That sucks. On the bright side, the weather will likely be even cooler next time. Don't hotlap it, although it's tempting especially with short lines. Ice the intake and run her down the track after a cool off period. When I go back and look at my timeslips there is a direct and undeniable correlation between my track times and how much of a cool down period the car had. When I ran my 13.59, the car had cooled down for approximately 40 minutes from my last run. Although it may not be as drastic for those running a cooling fan mod and lower temp t-stats. BUT I have a stock thermostat and no cooling fan mods.

Actually Don I have to agree with you. My car seemed to be the same way at certain times after a cool-down period. Like it needed to run down the track once to get a quick priming. It's totally bizarre to me and I don't know why, but it definitely slowed down after that. LOL

Oddly enough, my quickest E/T was first pass after a cool down.

On the bright side, I did lay the smackdown on some cocky kid in a hatch 5.0. Said his shift kit exhaust auto would kill my 'mercury'. His friends tried to say not to and that my car is actually pretty fast. I educated him with 3 peeps in the merc lol:lol:

I just found out that one of my old friends from the bike racing days helped out in the building and rehabbing of the track when it went from W.I.R. to K.I.D. I bet he can get a track day set up on an off day for a decient price I'm going to see him later this month and I'll talk to him about it. If I can make it happen I'll pass the word on.

It is pretty common in bracket racing that your first pass is never the quickest. Most will say it is do to the heavy rear diff fluid and the trans not being warmed up maker the second pass faster. Also depending on the outside temp after 40 or so minutes your coolant will be a lot cooler but the trans is still holding lots of heat.
