Gen 1 - HID Install

I've never paid much attention to posts about Gen 1's, so this probably has already been posted.

I installed a pair of HID housings and an aftermarket HID kit (using my adapters, of course ) in a '94 today, and was suprised to find that I had to modify the header panel in order to clear the high beam brackets on the HID housings.

Yes, if the car didn't come equipped with LSC housings, some modifications are required for them to fit. I didn't learn of this until Chris installed his.

the 95-96 header panels were different from the 93-94, in 95 they changed the header panel in anticipation for the HID lenses i believe..my header panel didn't require any modification, and the lenses fit just fine.

I can go for that because I just went to the garage and looked at mine and it looks like a set would go right in without any cutting. I have a 93 header panel right outside the back door and the holes are smaller.

btw DLF, you done a good job with your cutting and installation.

It depends on build date during 95 because HID's didn't come out until later in 95.

I know i was just saying it cause of keviiin made it sound as though all 95s didnt need grinding.

Gotchya and it makes sense. I don't think they really anticipated the HID's that year but went with it anyway and if I'm not mistaken, wasn't the Mark VIII the first car in North America to come out with HID's? Another reason some header panels were cut differently... Maybe they wanted to make sure they were the first and the header panel may have caught them by surprise. So many weird things were done right and wrong with the Gen 1, it's hard to comprehend.

There's also other stuff that changed later in the 95 model year..whatever that sensor is hanging off the rear view mirror was added on the late 95s...early ones aparently don't have it..i read about it somewhere, but forget what it was for..maybe the compass?

Yes, my compass is on the mirror too along with a green light button for the auto dim. I never use my compass or the auto dim feature but I like the looks of the mirror better than the 93's and 94's.

The kit joeynat bought and supplied had a DOA ballast.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought I have seen on here that I could convert my 93 stock headlight housings to HID bulbs ?? I have a new passengers side housing in it. I need a new or very good drivers side housing.

9005 kit is what you would need to convert. Pick your color but 4300K up to 6000K is best.

make sure to try the reversed polarity first. mine did not light until i plugged them in backwards. also in a gen 1. the factory halogen bulbs don't care about polarity so its not real important to factory assembly.

Hey people, it's me. I know what I'm doing.

But, thanks.

I'm using a relay harness that was also purchased at the same time, wired (through a fuse) directly to the battery, and triggered by the stock 9005 low beam connectors.

The bad ballast flickers the bulb for just a second as it's plugged in, and then nothing. I've swapped the ballasts from side to side, and the problem moves with the bad ballast. The good ballast works on both sides and lights both bulbs. The bad ballast won't work on either side.

And even the "good" ballast whines too loud, so I'm going to replace both of them.
