WOW! new Lincoln 2007 MKS sports sedan, with 315 HP V-8

Looks nice! But some of you guys will have to swap out those 20s for 18s...LOL! This car should have come out 5 years ago (or more). 300HP doesn't raise too many eyebrows in 2006.

Overall the car has its + and it has some -. I am excited to see what the public thinks when its unvailed at the auto show. I just hope this helps FLM realize that they need more V8s, but preferably RWD.

If the car was designed for 20" wheels then there is no need to change them. However, the Lincoln LS was not designed with it's F-1 formula inspired suspension to handle the weight of 20" wheels and tires. Now I'm not bashing the 20"+ wheel guys by any means. If you like them then ride 'em!

Why do I think they're not going to keep the concept touches and screw everything up?

Good observation Hyelife- didn't notice the leather on the dash.

I agree with you guys. It looks nice, but there is no way it will look like that. If they do produce it and not change anything, then there will the trouble on the streets :D

But if it were 300 HP and a good fuel economy, then that might be interesting...

I'll post my thoughts again:

The car looks like it was designed by Chris Bangle. It appears that the engine layout will be a Transeverse AWD system with a 4.4 derivitive of the Yamaha engine in the XC90, which itself started life in the Taurus SHO.

I have several issues with transverse engines. Note, Audi's AWD are Longitudinal. I am not talking here specifically about RWD vs FWD vs AWD, I am talking about engine orientation.

I owned an Escort GT and 3 Taurus SHO's (2 V6, 1 V8) over a 10 year span so I have a little "hands on" experience with transverse FWD. I did not know how good Longitudinal RWD was in comparison until I got my first LS (it had been so many years since I had one).

1. Transverse are terribly hard to work on (usually the rear set of plugs are a bear)

2. It is hard to tune exhaust as one bank of cylinders will always have a longer distance to the rear of the car. Where do you place the X or H pipe? Routing the exhaust from the front bank is tough to. It usually goes under the engine somewhere which has an impact on ground clearance.

3. Weight distribution is usually heavily biased toward the front. In most cases the transvers engine is sitting in front of or directly over the front wheels. Definitely was improved with the LS after owning SHO's.

4. The width of the engine and the transaxle and CV's all conspire to make the turning radius horrible. My LS can turn circles inside the SHO or any other Taurus. All of the FWD low end rental cars I get on the road have a terrible turning radius.

5. Tourque Steer. Nuff Said.

I didn't see where the engine is transverse mounted. That would surprise me with an AWD vehicle...but anything is possible I guess.

Tuning the exhaust is not an issue...the distance involved is miniscule...and current engineering techniques will make it moot.

Working on a sidewinder is a pain though I admit.

I'm sure weight bias will not compare to the LS. But then again, I can't think of any other car out there that does. But with an all aluminum engine and composite components, I think you might be amazed at how good it turns out.

Turning radius? You should drive my Cobra. You need 40 acres...and it's RWD. It's a function of tire size.

Torque Steer? You have to be kidding. I take it you've never driven a good AWD car. They are the best handling vehicle I have ever driven...period. They are amazing. If you need proof, look at what Andy Granatelli did at Indy so many many years ago with his AWD race car. It was so good they immediately banned it. RWD couldn't touch it. So unless you get your jollies by roasting the rear tires, you will find AWD to be a fantastic improvement in handling.

Lincoln may have a winner here. I would like to see more hp...and I'll bet it eventually gets it...but this looks like an amazing vehicle.

Volvo's AWD system is pretty good, so I think this baby could have potential, granted that they don't change anything. I have a feeling the suede/leather dashboard will be taken out for the final version.

It looks okay, but it looks too derivative and too much like everything else on the road. Parts of it look like a scaled-up Zephyr/Milan/Focus, and I also see a lot of Altima in it. I also definately can agree with the person who said it looks like Bangle designed it.

If the car went on sale tomorrow, it would be cause for some excitement. Unfortunately, by the time this car hits the streets, it will look as bland and dated as the Five Hundred's Passat-derived styling.

And about turning radius, it's not about tire size. FWD cars have huge turning radii. My LS had the same tire size as my wife's Taurus, and the LS turns on a dime, the Taurus is like the Queen Mary.

one thing I wanna know, Does it have HID.they keep saying halegon projector. I mean if they are going to create the best lighting system, HID has to be in there.

I'm pretty sure they're the same thing- both use halogen gases. eg. Xenon

The rear looks like a Saturn Ion, but then again, most cars these days look alike. For example, the rear of the new 2007 Lexus LS460 looks like a twin of the BMW.

But you're right- 2007 is too far away.

yeah that LS460 is going to be a very quick car! 4.6L markviii engine pumping out 380 horse... damn!

oh yeah plus an 8 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANNY!!!!! now that is a sic transmission! wish american cars had them!

The platform is Ford's D3, which is based on the platform underpinning the Volvo S80, so, yep, it's a transverse V8. This also fits with the use of the Ford/Yamaha/Volvo 4.4 V8 that's now powering Volvo's XC-90; if it weren't crosswise, you can bet your sweet bippy that it'd have the corporate 4.6l V8 shoehorned in there.

I hope they offer the V-8 as an option in the upcoming Lincoln MKX CUV then.

I can't believe they could only improve the HP by just 4 ponies over the current version that's in the XC-90.

I agree with the people saying it looks like the TL. The pics of the concept suv, mentioned in the blog link above, also looks a lot like the Acura suv:

I like how the sedan looks and like the sounds of the specs but I am skeptical of the suede seating. I bet that would look like sh** in no time. Looks like it would get dirty fast to me. Is suede easy to clean? I would rather have leather.

I know I wouldn't be able to afford one, but hopefully the resale will blow like it does on the LS so I can get a lightly used one in a couple years

peace

IIRC, the SVT Lightning has suede (or at least suede-like leather). I remember it being very soft to the touch the one time I got to sit in one, and it still looked very nice (the truck was used).

The big interior shot of the Mark S above doesn't seem to show a conventional ignition switch. Perhaps this car will have pushbutton start ???

I thought the switch was next to the steering column (ala the LS), but in his intro of the MKS, Horbury stated that the MKS has "smart key" technology--it will unlock the door and customize the seat, mirrors, temperature, "and the Bluetooth 14-speaker DVD surround sound system." I thought he said it used pushbutton start, but on review, I haven't heard that.

after looking at the Mk's engine again, i can not help but notice it has the same engine as the 4.4i BMW X5! since ford uses BM's block in the Range, why not drop it into a lincoln! the 4.4i X5 and the Mk's engine are the same 315HP 32v V8!

Like someone else said, hopefully this depreciates quickly so I can afford one in 2010. :) (and that my current LS lasts until then.)
