Wont start again

Ok so I did everything that I was told but try out the starter fluid.

Lasst night I said the hell with this sh*t and got some. I sprayed it in and it cranked even better as if I thougt it could but wouldnt turn over.

Woke up and said by god its a nice day, I'll try the starter fluid again.

B*tch fired up for me!

Any one have a part number for a fuel filter from Wal-Mart? Yup thats right I said it. If its the filter I'll pay for a second in better brand after I test it on a cheap-O Wal-Mart one. I used my brain and thought to myself last night " what if running my tank dry that day caused all the gunk at the bottom to simply clog my filter?" Duhhhhh sounds logical to me! Kinda pissed cause that filter was some what new but thats my fault

Hey JW2, that could have been your issue. From what I understand, some funky things can happen to your LS if you let it run out of gas...

:p

Unfortunately I am not lucky enough for someone to switch my car for a working one these days:shifty:

only running on the juice.....guess you have figured it down to a fuel prob now huh?

If you let it run dry, the fuel filter will be ruined. Samething happens to diesels. Guys let them run dry. They have to replace the fuel filter. Before restarting the engine. The pressure from the fuel pump destroys the filter internals. The fuel line should be fine. Just replace the fuel filter. Wtahc the fuel pump too. Letting it run dry can ruin it as well.

Wish I had read the thread sooner. Another member called me and told me about your problem.

Thanks for that. That makes sense also.

No one in my area had a filter on hand yesterday and snotty little sh*t at AutoZone was trying to tell me he couldn't order me one which made me wanna punch 'em.

By sh*t chance we went out to eat early dinner and the kids had left overs and spilled it all over our Highlander so I went to Spoilers Auto Spa to vacuum it up. I got a gift card for there for X-Mass and the one kid asked when I was bringing my car in since I got to talking to the guys a few times and wouldn't you know they had some crap ass filter?!

Its called Luber Filter:lol:

Anyway, with your reassuring info I just ordered one about 5 minutes ago.

I was thinking possibly the filter, but damn it would have to pick up a ton of crap to not flow ANY fuel. If the filter was never changed, I suppose its possible, but not likely. My tank (02 w/ 96K) was spotless when I was in there not too long ago (GT pump install) so I think if it was the filter, it simply ends there at the filter- there shouldnt be anything in/from your tank. Plus the pump has filters on it too.

Don't be alarmed if the filter swap does not fix things. Recheck your fuel pump fuse. If you ran the tank dry, or blocked flow with the filter, the pump could have over heated (or also the transfer pump). If it is that, a stock pump is around $115 I think (not sure the transfer pump cost). Either replace it yourself if you're comfortable working with an open tank, or take it someplace. It should not take more than 1-2 hours from start to finish. Access is under the backseat passenger side (x-fer pump on drivers side) under a black cover that snaps in place. Remove the red and white quick connects and electrical connector, and unscrew the blue ring. Save the gasket. Carefully pull the basket out of the tank (it snaps to the bottom of the tank). The rest is easy, and reverse order to put back together.

Anyway a filter is cheap and it doesn't hurt to do anyway, but test the other things like the injectors before blowing money on a pump or anything else.

I thought we ruled out the fuel system last time? Double you tee eff? :p

I wouldn't ever figured that a clogged filter would cause it to just straight up not start all of a sudden.

Neither would I.

Its all that's left pretty much. I know the pumps working I just know it and if it was injectors why would it not start at all rather than just misfire like a b*tch? I doubt all of them would have gone at the same time.

I checked all the fuses also. And I mean all of them! The only other thing is relays which I have no clue on how to tell a god one from a bad one.

If I must when I take out the filter can I quick start the car to see if anything comes out of the line from the pump as long as Im not in the line of fire and I am very careful and ummmm responsible?

If I keep cranking on it it starts to shake> Could that be fuel getting jammed up and causing more pressure causing it to shake like that?

I'm sure the injectors are fine as I said before. I just wanted you to try to diagnose before lobbing parts at it.
Its a lot safer, and you get useful data, to just buy a fuel pressure gage that attaches to the schrader valve on the fuel rail. It faces straight up on the driver's side rail. Its basically right in the middle, maybe slightly towards the front. You could do it your way, just be careful. It should dump fuel, but make sure it has a lot of pressure - should be 30 psi at idle I believe.
I don't know about the shaking. How long did it stay running with the starter fluid?

It ran pretty much until the fluid was spent.

Quick, I didnt put a pressure tester on the schrader valve. I dont have access to one. How much are they? Also I looked and looked for something like you guys mentioned explaining the valve but I couldn't find anything similar so Im guessing what I found must be it. Its a black cap and its kind of flattened on both sides at the tip.

the valve itself is a little tire valve cap looking thing (usually blue) about center on the driver's side fuel rail. You can buy a cheap fuel pressure gauge from AutoZone, PepBoys, Advance for under $20.

you need 40 psi at the injector nozzle - so at idle - you run about 18-22 in hg of vacuum (roughly -10psi) - so you should be near 30psi at the rail.

warning... masterful artwork skills ahead!

Mines not blue its black and flat on the sides like I said but thats where it was at but thats it.

remove the cap, it should look like a tire valve stem. if not, then thats not it. just try not to drop it, its in a crappy spot and easy to drop. not the end of the world if you do, just get a new cap so dirt can't get into it.

Haha its gotta be it. How many other things are on the fuel rail?

Tested the schrader valve and I got nothing but a squirt actually more like a slight trickle then as I got the valve of the pressure tester secure it showed nothing. Replaced the fuel filter and it ran for about a minute then nothing.

BTW, I lost the damn cap to the valve in the engine compartment:Bang

I disconnected the fuel pumps power and noticed the noise I thought was the pump was not there which tells me so far with what I have it is running but with out being able to further test it in any way I wont know for sure.
