I am trying to reinstall my wiper arms... there is a little plastic piece that is supposed to line up with the arm and the mount on the car,.. but how do I get the arm to lock in place? Gen 2 98 Lincoln Mark 8 LSC..

It has to go down so far and then it should lock in place. I have used a hammer with a rag in between but don't beat it down. Just tap at it and see if it goes. If it's lined up right, it should go down in place.

They have to be sprung in the up position to put them on, they will slip down onto the spline once they bottom out then lower the arm back down to the glass and push the little tab back in to lock the retainer clip to the spline shaft.

I'm trying to remove mine so I can repaint them..how do I remove?

Easy once you get it right once. Move or pull that tab underneath out. Then pull up. Thats all. But its like a Chinese finger trap! So you have to make sure you pull up straight up. The tendency is to pull then at an angle because you may also be pulling on the wiper arm. What I learned is to pull up on the wiper arm a little but also pull firm on the butt end of the arm.

Note the pic below, the arm is down and you can see a small tab which is the lever to lock the arm up off the glass.

To remove the wiper arm, you lift the arm off the glass and pull out on the locking tab and release the arm. The locking tab will then be holding the arm tension with the wiper off the glass.

Then it is a simple matter of pulling the wiper arm off the pivot.

yep, I tinkered with it for a few minutes today...it didn't jump right of so I'll come back to it....good to know more muscle is not the answer on this one

I tend to pull the lever out with a screw driver and gentely pry up under it with another and it seems to pop pretty easy. my problem is i can never get them to go on and sit all the way down like they used to :(. well not the passanager side one anyway. its always about 2 - 3 inches higher then it was stock.

There is a small woodruff key that aligns the wiper arms in the proper position. It is so small, you likely never noticed it and it is lost. You can still get them in the proper position, it just takes some time to fiddle with it.

youre probably right. but it apears like there is a notch on the part where the arm goes. so i just slide it into the notch and say f-it.
