Why would there be oil here (driver's side)?

Why would there be oil here? Around and leaking from front plug on driver's side.

that is a commonish problem with the Gen2 - oil seeping from the VVT solenoid.

so the fix is a new solinoid, or resecuring of the current one?

A new o-ring seal. I think it was about $100, installed, at the dealer.

$100 is cheap considering you have to pull the valve covers - or can you do it without? ....

I had the car in at the dealership yesterday for a `maintenance package` (glorified oil change but wanted a few things checked out on the car - forgot about this one until today though) and brake fluid flush.

They did not mention this oil though and it`s obviously clearly visible. I`ll have to email the service advisor the pic and ask about it.

Do you think it`s easy enough that I can fix this myself when I replace the spark plugs soon

Yes, I'm pretty sure they had to pull the valve cover. However, they didn't charge for new valve cover gaskets, just the one o-ring and one hour labor.
