What should I do first?

I have come up with 3 options of what I think should be done first. The problem is that I can only afford to do one and I don't know which to pick.

1. Sniper Tuning....I'm Leaning this way because then I can tune my truck also

2. 3.73's with trac-loc....This is kinda expensive but it's something that I think will make the car more fun to drive. I was quoted $350 for install from a shop around here, thats with me supplying the parts. Is that out of line?

3. Bigger MAF...I might be able to swing this and Sniper at the same time and from what I'm told it will make a nice little differnece.

Anyway I'm just looking for ideas of where to start. Look forward to hearing your input.
 
I'd go with the tuner/maf first if you can't afford to do it all at once, imho.
With the gears, to get the best bang out of them you'd want the tune anyways for the proper shifts and extra goodies you'll want, so do the tuner first then it can be played with again once the gears are in. It's not like a 1st gen where you'd need to get a re-burn...
$350 is decent for an install, about average from all I've read, are you putting a traction-lok in it too?

maf and tune !!!..

made a huge difference in mine..

get the gears later and adjust the tune accordingly

Tune first.... its the biggest bang for the buck....

A bigger maf is totally useless.... a mark cannot peg out the stock maf, upgrading it is useless....

The best three mods in order of largest improvement...

1. Tune
2. Gears
3. Converter
 
I agree with the kid above, for the most part.

I would do gears first. Its mechanical and you will notice them.

The tune.... well this would be great also. But the MAF and gears can play a little into the equation. I agree that a bigger MAF is not needed, UNLESS you have larger exhaust. As said many times before, the stock Mark breathes fine, its the exhaust end that needs work.

And since anything you do to the engine really needs a tune, the last thing to do is the tune or better yet, make it part of the project and have the tune done at the same time.

I have to agree here. But keep in mind that gears and converter will require a new tune as the shift points should be changed.
 
just say no to a larger maf.

And if your tuning an obd2 car, I'd go with the SCT PRP and an Xcal2.

I have to disagree.

adding larger exhaust isn't going to make the piston pull in more air on the intake stroke.

the air ingested by the engine is solely dependant upon the piston pulling the air into the motor in the intake stroke. the exhaust valve is closed so it has no real effect on air entering the engine.

If you make it easier for exhaust to exit that is a whole different ball game in an completely different engine cycle.

They do work hand in hand, but they dont "hold hands".
 
you can't go wrong with the Tune. You need the tune for Gears anyways, so why not get a tune first so you don't have to buy the tune and the gears at the same time. If you get the tune, you have done part A of the job. Also it can tune two cars so right now, the tune sounds like a better deal as a first mod.
 
IMO 1)The gears should go first. You will feel the difference. The sniper tune will not adjust for the gear change or tire size. 2)Then get the sniper. It works. 3)I don't know about the MAF? will it really do anything???? I'd save my money. and get N2O
 
after the n2o then get a high stall converter. THe exhaust is costly and lsc's already have true dual pipes. Might not be alot to gain other than the cool sound.
 
Doing exhaust helps increase the efficiency of getting the air pumped into the motor out... happening after the MAF....

You have to understand what all these mods are going to really cost, and understand what they actually do to the car....

Cutting the mufflers off and putting a cone filter in place of the stock air box isn't going make your car faster.... sorry

Sniper can not change the shift points? That doesn't sound right to me. Even a car with stock gearing can benefit from shift point changes let alone one with 3.73s.

well your gonna get this guy who takes his car to the dragstrip, makes a run.. then hacks off the rear of the exhaust at the Y pipe then runs .1 (a tenth) quicker..

Then he's gonna come back and say "it made my car faster"..when.. actually just cutting the almost 100lb pair of mufflers off is what made it faster.

Unless he has crappy tires, and then removing that weight from over the rear tires causes him to lose traction, making his car run slower....

Never said sniper cann't change the shift points. Sniper can not recalibate for gear and tire size changes. Yes you can change when and how hard. How ever I wouldn't recommend changing the firmness with the tune. Instead get a good shift kit installed. This will add life to the trans.

No tuner can recalibrate the speedo on these cars if that is what you saying. Gen1s run off the speedo gear in the trans I believe and Gen2s run off the ABS sensors so rear gear changes wouldn't affect them.

Recalibrating the shift points is what I was referring to and that makes a big difference in how the car drives. Even with stock gearing changing shift points makes a difference.

Firming up the shifts with a tune is ok as long as you don't get crazy but yeah a good shift kit/jmod is definitely the way to go.
 
Right thats what I was sayin. No option to change the gears. THere is an option to change the tire size but it will not do anything for the mark's.
 
There is not an easy easy way to adjust for gear changes... my buddy can do this with his xcal2 sitting in his car... you have to a bit more to make these changes with a Mark... that being said, it can be done.
