As a long-time Ford guy, I fell in love with the Mark VIII when I first saw it in '92. The styling and technology were just amazing to me. And I friggin' loved the interior, with that wrap-around cockpit. Pure sex.
I couldn't afford one at the time of course, but always drooled over them when I saw one. Around 2002, I started looking at them seriously because the prices were coming way down and I was making a whole lot more money. As fate would have it, I was rear-ended in my 95 T-bird in November of 2002, and I made it my mission to own a Mark VIII. I ended up finding a near mint '98 with 24k miles on it at a little used car dealership and bought it for a whopping $14,000.
I babied the car and kept it nice and clean for several years, but the fact that I had to park it outside took its toll and I started to lose interest. I neglected the car badly for about four years, only changing the oil regularly, and doing other maintenance only when it became a problem.
Then in 2010 I came into some cash and decided I wanted to get the car back up to spec. I talked to Jeremi and he agreed to take on the project, so I dropped the car off at his house and left it with him for about two months. I actually asked him not to post pics of the progress because they were so bad. In fact, he tried to talk me into just buying another Mark, it was so bad.
In any case, he managed to turn it around. Replaced nearly everything on the front end including the K-member and all the suspension and steering, new SS brakes lines, and Por-15'ed the underside back to the fuel tank. Swapped the hubs and installed Cobra brakes, along with Speedstars. And we had the drivers side rocker panels replaced along with a partial repaint.
When I got it back I became obsessed with restoring the rest of the car. In 2011 we restored the entire rear end including the subframe, new bags, re-plated hardware, and fuel tank.
Over the past couple of years I've managed to collect an amazing stash of NOS parts. My next goal is a complete engine bay restore, right down to the nuts and bolts. I've got a huge box of original Ford fasteners, all new fluid reservoirs, brackets, sensors, along with a complete NOS A/C system from condensor to evaporator. Pretty much everything that isn't the engine block and heads I have new of. It's sick I know, but I am a detail freak. If I had a dream job I'd restore old cars, and I'd be the guy who knew what finish a particular bolt had in 1972. Since I can't afford to restore my dream car (a 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T), I'll have to settle for this car. LOL.
