So, I remember back when I was super-into buying car audio and stuff (I've had the same JL Audio setup in my 98 for like 7 years), Infinity seemed like it was pretty good. I had a roommate that always wanted some Infinity Perfect subs. Reviews at the time seemed pretty good and I think the specs were also pretty decent, but I had my sights set on the JL W7's and just had to have them!
Recently one of my co-workers needed some money and offered me some stereo equipment for my 97. He knows I hate driving the 97 compared to my 98 mostly because of the stereo difference. Until recently, I only had the stock system with some decent Pioneer 6 x 8's that I got from the junkyard for $6 each, and a couple weeks ago I bought a used Pioneer DEH-P7700MP from another co-worker for $60. I've always loved Pioneer head units and have had 4 or 5 of them so far. They've all done me well.
Anyway, I got 2 amps and 2 subs in a box for $200. I know this guy really well, and I know he wasn't lying when he said that he only used them for a couple months. Plus, they literally look brand new. Here's what they are....
Pictures are kinda crappy...
Infinity Reference 7541a, 4 channel amp.
Infinity Reference 611a, 2 channel sub amp.
2 Infinity Perfect 10's in a box built/designed for a Mustang.
This'll put me at less than $300 so far for what I think will be a pretty bangin' system. The only thing left so far is wiring. I'm kicking myself for giving away all of the extra stuff that I had saved for years "just in case" to my brother-in-law, cuz otherwise I'd already have everything I need to install this stuff. Oh well, wiring can be had cheaply.
Back when I had my Explorer, system installs were always very easy....sub box behind the rear seat, and the amp underneath the rear seat. I went through countless arrangements of stereo components in the year I had that truck. When I bought my first Mark VIII, I had everything professionally installed so that I didn't fukk it up. lol. I'd like to attempt to recreate one portion of their install that I really liked, if only to give me some practice at this kind of stuff.
Here's what I had:
2 JL 12W7's
1 JL 1000/1 (later upgraded to 2 of them)
1 JL 300/4
1 3 farad digital capacitor
1 Optima Yellow Top battery.
JL 6x8 XR components for the doors
JL 6x8 XR coax-components for the rears
I stressed to them that I REALLY needed to be able to get to my spare tire (I put over 30k miles on that car in 9 months of driving it) with everything installed. They weren't really happy about that idea, but they acquiesced. The part that I want to recreate with this current system is the "amp rack." They could basically only use the small slivers of space on either side, and then the very back of the trunk for the sub box, so I could still lift my spare tire cover and remove the spare tire if needed. They ended up making a base on the right side of the trunk with 2 pieces of carpeted wood jutting up, one all the way against the right side, and the other about 5 or 6 inches toward the center. They mounted the 2 amps to those 2 pieces of wood (the smaller 300 watt amp to the smaller piece all the way outboard and the larger 1000 watt amp to the larger piece more toward the center) and spaced them so that the trunk hinge would swing down between them. I thought it was a really awesome design and looked really good as well. I didn't have a digital camera at that time, so I never got the chance to take pictures of it. Unfortunately, everything was stolen in July of 2003 and then the car was totaled in August 2003. I mostly recreated the system in my current 98, but it's installed differently cuz the stereo shop wanted like $300 more to do what I just described with the amps...
Anyway, I'll probably practice with the 97 and if it ends up good, then I'll attempt it in the 98 as well.
Sorry for the novel. lol.
