Hi guys, I have spent the last hour or two outside to replace my degas bottle.

Part 1:

Anyways while under the hood I was being super annoyed by a 'whistle' sound that is coming from the area directly in the middle of the engine from above. I first thought it was something to do with my intake, I pinched and squeezed everything in there to try and hear the pitch change, but to no avail. I had the engine cover off because I am bleeding the system so I pinpointed the sound coming from like where the intake body meets the engine?

I am not sure what terms to use when describing where its coming from, but it is a distinct high pitch whistling that does change with engine sound, it does not change in audibility, but it changed in whether I can hear it or not.

@ idle the sound is constant, if I give it a little throttle it goes away, but let off back to idle and it returns.

This is super annoying! Anyone had this before?! I know it was not there before, as I have worked under the engine alot while its running and never been this annoyed.

Part 2:

As I mentioned earlier I am bleeding the system because I just changed out the degas bottle. Alot of coolant poured out when I took off the old bottle, but when I filled the new one, only the amount to fill the bottle is what actually went into the system. So I have a bucket full of old coolant that is almost full, but only a degas bottle full went back into the system!?

I have been doing the instructions on http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/tech/Lincoln-LS/CoolingSystemDraining/ but I cannot get anything to come out of the bleeder valve, I let it idle for almost 15 minutes straight before the engine started shaking!!!! I got scared and turned it off, now I am letting it cool.

Also the engine fill cap that is in front of the engine is full to the rim, Anytime I take it off, coolant comes pouring out of it and I have to catch it all to avoid it hitting my drive belts.

This is very frustrating as I know more coolant can fit in, I just dunno how to get the system to take it!?

Thanks in advance for any helpful hints or advice.

Part 1: Sounds like a vacuum leak to me. Get some sensor safe cleaner spray (or starting fluid) and spray it where the sound is coming from. If the sound changes and/or the engine reacts, then you have found a vacuum leak.

Part 2: I haven't done this before, but I will be doing it soon, my coolant outlet pipe cracked. At this point, I can only advise that you follow the fill procedure.

Okay just went out and did some more searching...

Turns out that the entire bleeder hose was caked full of sludge?

I squeeze the tip and a tube of gunk just shot out.

So i pried off the entire hose and took it inside and pressured water through it to push all the crap out.

I would say about 5-6 inches of gunk came shooting out before the water ran freely.

This turned out to be my problem with bleeding, the coolant was being stopped up in the bleed hose! Dam.

After the hose was off, the steel piping in the back that connects to the bleed hose was actually flowing perfectly, there was no stoppage there. Only in the hose.

I flushed out as much as I could and put in fresh coolant and now the bleeding process is actually working.

Just ran it to op. temp. Now waiting for it to cool and then repeating the process again.

Update: I got the system bled and the new bottle works great.

Now as for the whistle sound. I have figured out what is causing it at least:

Okay the whistle sound dissapears when I do one of the following:

1: Anytime the A/C is running (including defrost)

2: Turn on defrost without A/C

3: Turn on air for (head)

If I just turn on say, (body) and (foot) air, the sound comes on. As long as I have air coming out of the defrost vents or the A/C is on, the sound is gone.

It does not matter the fan speed.

Also to add, I hear a 'clicking' sound that seems to be initiating and disengaging the whistle sound when I switch from no air, to defrost or something.

Once again the sound is constant @ idle unless I have air coming out of the defrost/head or the A/C is running.

the LS uses a standard Ford coil/clutch setup on the AC:
- the pulley spins freely with the AC off
- then when turned on - a coil inside the pulley energizes and pulls the outter clutch disc into the pulley - thus engaging the shaft of the compressor. Now the spinning pulley also turns the outer clutch, which is also spinning the compressor shaft.

So that's the 'click' noise you here when the AC goes off/on.

As far as the whistle - depends on how bad it is and where you think it is coming from....
I was getting a very loud 'break squealing' noise when the AC was on and after the car was warm. Turns out the the clutch disc was wore down and started slipping once in a while - making a squeal. I had to swap the coil, pulley and disc.

It does sound metal-ish I suppose. Perhaps I should see what greasing the pulley does.

Thanks for that info.

Any other thoughts?

Hey did anyone figure out where the high pitch noise was coming from?? I am having the same issue and its accompanied by a rough idle and misfire cyl#3. Now i have replaced the COP on cylinder 3 after I got the code but the rough idle is still there and after resetting the CEL code it came back with the misfire cyl#3 again with the new COP. Any way I am getting the same exact whistle sound coming from what sounds like the middle of the upper (plastic) intake plenum/manifold just behind where the throttle body attaches. Its hard to say exactly where its coming from. I am really stressing as I am home in portland or right now on break from school and need my ride to get back to seattle on the 4th. Any thoughts are helpful or if you guys figured out where the whislte is coming from.... My thought is vacuum leak between the upper plenum and lower intake but I ordered gasket set on line and only got lower set :shifty:

The long story is i originally got a CEL code for misfire in first 1000rpms with no cylinder misfire code. then I got #8 misfire replaced it and test drove it fine then next day got #3 code replaced it and now I am where I stated above with the misfire #3 code and the whistle. Its only around idle to just a hare over 1000rpms by the way.

My ride is a 03 LS8 with 48k miles and no other ailments at the moment.

*EDIT* So the actual code I am getting is code P0353 Ignition Coil C Primary/Secondary Circuit. Now from what i just read on another post this is not a symptom of a bad COP? I'm a little lost now. *EDIT*

You are still under the extended coil warranty so you can get your coils replaced for free under 100,000 miles. Misfires aren't only caused by bad coils, the plug could also be bad. Not an epxert on this, hopefully someone will chime in with better info

Holy crap batman! Really? So I just go into dealer and tell them the problem and they will fix them free of charge? Do you know if they will replace the valve cover gaskets?

Thanks for the response I will call my dealer tomorrow but they can be real jerks lol so I may have to twist some arms.:D

As for P0353 you probably have a wiring harness or a PCM issue. (You did replace the spark plug, right?)
As for the wine, try spraying some throttle body cleaner around where the sound is coming from. When you change the sound or engine running, you've found the leak.

It won't cover P035x codes.

My car also has the same whistle sound that comes and goes with the a/c. It also goes away when the you tap the gas.
