Vehicles that have 4.10 Gears at junkyard

4.10 Gears are found in F-150, Ranger, and Explorers. Of course, it doesn't matter what spline it is if you are only going to use the gears (ring & pinion), but it does have be an 8.8". Be careful not to get a 7.5" rear gear if you find a Ranger, because they are common.

Now, if you are going to get a trak-loc unit from a bone yard, you need to make sure they use the 28 spine, not the 31. Unfortunately, Explorers are 31 spline even though they are very common. Mustangs & Thunderbirds are your best bets, but if you want IRS cut gears (preferred, but NOT required), 1989- Thunderbirds (my TL unit came from a 1987 5.0L Thunderbird which didn't have the IRS bevel, but it was pretty easy to modify).

Maybe a dealer option.

The terminator as built by ford had 3.55s only.

And for the record a terminator 31 spline rear will not be a direct bolt into a mark with 28 spline axles.

This

3.55s and 3.55s only from Dearborn. The dealer or anyone else could have done a gear swap just like any other car.

Awd mountaineers and explorers have 3.73's with trac loc. Not an irs but you could use the gears.
I went with 3.73's and now that I'm building the motor I'm wishing I went 3.55's.

I went with 4.10s and if I did it again I would have gone with 4.30s

Anyone what to explain or point to a thread about setting up gears? Its going to be a long long time before I have money to pay someone to hook them up for me. But I would like to have an idea of what Im getting into for future reference.

Also is using a rear end with 4.10 not going to work? Someone mentioned that it wont work because the clips but that was contradicted by another post saying it didnt matter. Other than the clips is it just a bolt on?

the 4.10s are unrelated to the c clip issue.

there are two styles of 8.8 rear end. solid axle, and independent rear suspension (IRS).
the IRS carriers (either trac loc or open) have a bevel on the spider gears. the c clip on the end on the half shaft slides into the gear and sits against the bevel. this holds the half shaft in place.

the shafts in a solid axle are hold on by other means at the end of the axle tube, making clips to hold the axle in the carrier unnecessary. so the solid axle carriers do not have the bevel.

if you insert a half shaft with a c clip into a solid axle carrier, the c clip will get stuck requiring differential disassembly to remove the half shaft.

i do not use c clips. the half shafts stay put without the c clips. your mileage may vary.

In solid 8.8 rears the axles are held in with horseshoe shaped washers on the end of the axles in the diff. You need to pull the diff center pin then push axle in then pull horseshoe washer out,now you can pull axle.

Setting up gears refers to lining up the ring and pinion in the housing so they make contact the correct way. Due to manufacturing tolorences and wear if they are used not all gear sets even the same ratio are the same. If they are not set up correctly it can be noisey and or lead to premature wear.

As other poeple posted it's not changing the gears that is the issue it's changing the dif. IMHO 4.10s and the stock open carrier are a waste.

hate to break it to you but your last sentence is false. the 03-04 cobra had a factory 4.10 option and will bolt in. but finding one of those is like hens teeth

I have an 04 cobra and there isn't an option for 4.10's.

GEARS DOES NOT MATTER WHAT IT CAME OUT OF AS LONG AS IT'S A FORD 8.8". Sorry, I'm pretty sure I stated that earlier. The clips thing is for a Trak-Loc unit. If you get a trak-loc that did not have IRS, it won't be beveled on the side gears for you to easily pop your half-shafts out.

You said someone said it won't work. Not true, you can put it in without beveling the side gears - it just makes the half shafts hard to pop out cause the little clips have no beveled surface to slide against.

The best solution? Just find a set of 4.10's from Expedition or Ranger - they are everywhere. Get a trak-loc from anything, too. It's easy to check if the vehicle has a trac-lok. With the VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL and both rear tires off the ground, spin one tire. If the other tire turns opposite direction - no trak-loc. If the other tire spins the same direction, it has a trak-loc. Oh, almost forgot, the trak-loc has to have 28 splines for further complicate things - lol!

Anyways, that's the long and short of it. The gears from any 8.8" Ford will fit your car and they are ALL THE SAME. And, truthfully, all Ford units came with beveled gears after a certain year - I just can't remember what it was, but older trak-locs without IRS don't have beveled side gears.
