Turbo gauges- a-pillar pod or nav screen

A Pillar gauges look more old school. A good or a bad thing, depending on your likes. I don't like A Pillar gauges so much anymore, simply because they can and do block some of the driver's field of vision around the A-Pillar. I know, "Move y0' damned head!", but still.

The electronic stuff like the HKS is nice, but you do need an A/V input and it only displays 6 PID's at a time. Neat, but if you have aftermarket stuff like say, water-meth, nitrous or aftermarket boost, they are kind of pointless.

There are several manufacturers that make OBDII (and CANBus) interfaces like the HKS thing. Even Pioneer made a head unit a few years ago that read OBDII PID's. There is another manufacturer that makes a killer set-up that will support add-ons as well, but I can't remember who it was now.

You can also look into a DashDaq by DrewTech (Drew TEchnologies). With your mounting skills, I wouldn't be surprised if you install it in a cool place.

I have that Pioneer head unit in the F-350 we have here. Its more of a "fun" thing than a serious gauge.

I just really feel the LS is more luxury than performance. Maybe some real gauges but with digital read-outs?

Ive heard those electronic gauges have a slight lag to them.

Depends on the hardware and the update rate from the PCM. OBDII will be slower than CANBus. Some of the PID's on CANBus are updated up to 60 times a second, while others are updated only 10. It's all about what the ECU needs the update rates to be at, and will only be able to send the data to the monitoring unit at said speeds.

Furthermore, the more gauges you "load" on the device, the slower all of the PID's will update. It's a matter of bandwidth.

Can't say that I've ever used the Pioneer set-up. I'm only going by what I saw. Though, in retrospect, I would suspect you're right about it being more of a "fun" thing.

Yeah its more of a novelty feature the in-dash has. Its pretty "cool" but nothing very practical or that I'd depend on.

Some think I am crazy for having heads worked and a mild cam ground for "just an LS". Do whatever you feel is best for you car Alax. I have been considering just same type of question because I want to know exactly what is going on with my new engine. As much as I don't want to upset the interior of my car, it may be simply more effective to do just that and go with the A Pillar gauges.

Thats just because of the engine.

If the LS had a 4.6 mod every other person here would be pushing high numbers.

We have some power but you can only do so much without forced induction.

I meant that statement only referring to a stock LS. Of course in your situation or Quik or anyone else who has done more than an exhaust/intake/tune I think the gauges are necessary. To be honest if I had the money I'd be doing the same project as FastLLS. Not because its "just an LS" but because a modded LS is badas$

What about this location? I'll cut a hole through the gauge trim so the gauges come out at an angle

I REALLY like this idea!

Zero miles with more power for less than $1900. What is so wrong with that???? Someone please make me see what I am missing??? LOL

Originally, blown was my target. I truly want to see goes Fasts turns out. But time to do it just wasn't there for me after I factored in my life needs so I figured this was the next best way to enjoy my car a bit more than the next intake / exhaust only Ls owner. Barring delays, the engine ships next Wed or Thurs. I will share pics once it arrives.

Thanks for "seeing" where my post to this thread was intended. :)

Not when I paid cash for the Ls to begin with. Not going through the dance of trying to sell it.

That's definitely different but that would also take away from the OEM look. I think I'm going to mount them like in the last picture, by cluster trim. Ill save up and switch over to the navigation gauges a little later when I can save for it. I already ordered an extra trim to cut info.
Thanks guys and thanks loudls for giving me the idea with the mustang gauges

Alax7;811608True. Funny thing said:
modified exhaust[/B], can't believe he got me for exhaust.

Having a modified exhaust isn't illegal but if it's to loud is though, not more than 95dB in specific conditions.

A General rule of thumb is anything after the catalytic converter(and it's o2 sensor if equipped)(and less then 95dB) and anything before the MAF sensor is legal. CA doesn't state what a muffler must be made of, only what it must do. This is why some people do rear mount turbos, because it muffles the exhaust. Nevermind that it has other things mounted to it.

Here's the laws:

CA. V.C. 27151 No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of such vehicle so that the vehicle is not in compliance with the provisions of Section 27150 or exceeds the noise limits established for the type of vehicle in Article 2.5(commencing with Section 27200) of this chapter. No person shall operate a motor vehicle with an exhaust system so modified.

This shows that there are other characteristics that the exhaust system must conform to truly show a violation. This also shows that other vehicle codes must be considered when in violation of this vehicle code.

CA. V.C. 27150 (a) Every motor vehicle subject to registration shall be equipped with an adequate muffler in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise, and no muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass, or similar device.

(b) Except as provided in Division 16.5 (commencing with Section 38000) with respect to off-highway motor vehicles subject to identification, every passenger vehicle operated off the highways shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler in constant operation and proper maintained so as to meet the requirements of Article 2.5 (commencing with Section 27200), and no muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass, or similar device. (c) The provision of subdivision (b) shall not be applicable to passenger vehicles being operated off the highways in an organized racing or competitive event conducted under the auspices of a recognized sanctioning body or by permit issued by the local governmental authority having jurisdiction.

Part (a) states that the muffler must suppress any excessive or unusual noise. This refers to part (b) which states that the muffler must meet the requirements of Article 2.5, which refers to noise levels. Part (a) and (b) also refer to a cut-away, bypass or similar device commonly known as a "dump."

If you are still to loud, then put a "normal" muffler after the turbo.

which gauges would you use? This more decorative than functional - right?

I read somewhere that anything done to the exhaust is "illegal", no modifications, has to say stock.

I already have the gauges, bought them in December because the Turbo was suppose to go on then but didn't. I have autometer gs gauges that light up green. Boost and fuel pressure. Why?

Oh, and one more idea, not as cool though. I plan on putting my A/F ratio gauge where the cigarette lighter is so I can conceal it. It's an option but way out of view.

Not true, take the laws I just posted to court, worse thing will happen is they send you to a ref to prove it's not to loud. My cousin-in-law works for a smog referee and he has a mustang gt with not cat-back. He says they could get him for being to loud, not nothing else.

The cops might read it that way because they are trying to make the state money to save their jobs.

I must have missed the thread where no turbo was happening.

I'm just going to tell the cop which checks it that I had no mufflers and now I put them on so it's quieter. I was also thinking of putting the gauges where the cig lighter is but you would probably need one of those 45mm gauge. The turbo is still happening it just didn't get installed over winter because the shops the Guy is working with all closed for the holidays and that delayed everything.

To each their own. Good luck.
