Ticking Noise!?!?

I had always thought this was my tensioner.. but now right next to the intake manifold I hear what sounds like a much quieter, more rapid starter tick the entire time the car is running. Its loud enough to hear outside the car, but not as harsh as a starter. Could this be a miss-firing plug?

I check inside where the plugs are, and there is a little oil in the "bay" i guess we can call it... down by where the plugs are.. Is this normal?

Anyone familar with this sound, its not the same LASER had, its not a grinding or rubbing of a chain, its ust a rapid tick, like a quick small spark or something

EDIT - GREAT..now I got my 5/8th plug socket stuck in the bay and cant get it out... I also cant get the plug to turn, dont want to torque it too much but that might be the only way to get the plug and the socket out of the "bay" :(

(Also - I bought the plugs from Autozone, they are gapped already right? the guy gave me the ones for the mark, but the box says I have to gap them!??!)

The oil inside the tubes is not normal. A little is OK but if its alot you have to replace the tube and valve cover seals.

Don't try to remove the plugs while the engine is hot. The steel plugs and aluminum heads expand at different rates and you may strip the threads in the heads.

The plugs do not come gapped. You have to gap them. The plugs bang around inside the boxes during shipping so you don't know what they are set at.

the engine isn't hot but I did run it for a min about 2 hours ago after changing he oil.

How much oil would u call too much? And also how difficult of a job is the replacing of the tubes and valve cover seals?
 
Please make sure to gap the plugs and I hope you bought Autolite copper. .054 would be the gap you need. If you torque on that plug, be sure to do it evenly as possible but seriously, you might want to consider taking it and having it removed or just pay to have it loosened but tight enough to get you back home until it cools down again to swap the plugs. If that plug breaks off in there, you're really gonna get pissed.

I went with motorcraft - how the fugg do I gap it? The guy at autozone gave them to me and said they were good to go after checking which I needed
 
to get your spark plug socket out of the tube, and to prevent it from happening again, go to the tool store and get a 10 inch locking extension.

Sears comes to mind first. about $10 bucks. spark plug gappers are a dollar.
 
Buy a plug gapper.

Change the plugs when cold.

When installing the new plugs you only make them finger tight then maybe a 10* turn with the wrench.

Our cars hold 6-7 quarts depending on some weird mystical occurence. Put in 6 quarts and then check the dip stick, dip-stick. If its just tuching it but not to the cross hatch area then add another half quart and check it again. Not rocket science.

If the top of the plugs are real wet with oil then you need new valve cover seals. The are $50 for the complete set. Have someone do them for you, you do not have the skills to R&R the covers. Sorry but if you have to ask how much oil is too much then I couldnt walk you through the VC removal.
 
Be sure to put anti-sieze on the threads of your new spark plugs and do not over torque them.

Thanks A*SS!!! :) I meant how much oil is too much IN THE SPARK PLUG TUBE!!!'

I know how to read engine oil :(

Sorry, was only going by you car knowledge history. Didn't meen to offend.
 
I looked online and it doesnt look like all that much of a PITA to do - I need to remove the hoses and brake master cylinder I guess, then just swap the gaskets and touch 2 parts with some RTV then I should be good to go.

Any recommendation as to where to get a good gasket set?

Anything else I should do while Im in there? Swap intake manifold?
 
I got my set from Rock Auto. Ford is overly proud of their gaskets, sorry Max. :(


Please, whatever you do to remove the valve covers dont go use a "Dead On" hammer! :lol:

You will need a wobbly extension for your wrench and a short AND long 13mm socket.
