This Thread for Pioneer AVIC-D3 Installs.

Got a 02 LS and running into problems hooking up the wires. The RCA cable that is supplied with the wiring harness, where does that go? Does it hook into the subwoofer output, front output, or rear output?

Second, the illimunation wire. I got a ORN pos and a BLK & ORN neg from the LS wiring harness and a WHT & ORG on the AVIC harness. Which one do I hook up to the AVIC harness? I also read that you might have to hook it up to the cigrette lighter, but if you do that which wires do you hook up to which? Thanks.

I just finished putting the AVIC into the bezel. I bought it from crutchfield.com. It was $20. Had to do a lot of dremeling and had to use some auto trim. Not the best job, but wasn't too $$$. No paint

Just figured out the illumination wire. Don't use either the ORN and ORN and BLK from the LS wiring harness. Rather hook up the AVIC ORN & White wire to the pos on the cig light.

Didn't figure out the RCA prob yet.

No paint. Just ordered it from crutchfield and it was like that. I think the part number was like LLSK580 or something like that. I comes as a single din, then I just dremeled out the bottom space. I just couldn't bring myself to spend $60 + $paint for that face piece. I had to build a bracket out of scrape sheet metel to support the back of the AVIC, the holes for a 02 LS didn't match up. But that wasn't the fault of the faceplate. Then I had to drill 3 holes for the faceplace to ajoint with the temperture control unit and use a little plastic weld to hold it in place. Lot of work, but how much fun would life be if it were easy:)

just to make something clear, i havnt gone to the store or anything to place an order but before i do, the dash kit and frame is available right? they still make them?

I'm in the process of cutting up and painting the nav bezel and can't seem to find any information on how to actually install the navigation unit. I've got a D2 that I had in another car, and that install was easy with the metal sleeve installing into the car and the nav just slid right into that, and the little trim piece goes on to cover the screws and you're done. How is it done with the LS and the bezel from teamfordparts? You can't slide the sleeve through the new bezel, the opening just isn't big enough. Is the sleeve used at all? Or is the sleeve installed before the bezel somehow, and then you slide the nav in, and the last move is to put the bezel on? I'm just curious how everyone else is doing it.

note for those of you who have a Ipod Classic:

DO NOT UPGRADE TO VERSION 1.03!!! You will lose the functionality to watch videos on your AVIC D3 through the IPOD. Stay at v.1.01 or 1.02. I downgraded mine to v.1.02 and have the functionality back.

Hi, everyone:

I've been following this thread with interest, as I'm in the process of installing a D3 in my 2002, but I seem to have hit a snag with fitting the D3 through the dremel'd faceplate. I've removed everything from the back of the faceplate, but the D3 still won't fit. It looks like the curved edge on the corners takes up too space for the squared-off edges of the D3 to fit through.

Everything that I've read says that you only need to dremel stuff off the back to fit, but it looks like I've taken everything I can from there, and it still doesn't fit.

Any ideas?

(here's some pictures - hopefully they show clearer what my problem is ...)

clean up your cut edges a bit and squeeze her on through. YOu are almost there. THe D3 does need a bit of help going through the opening.

haha yea 2000 cuholder suck bro.. they were probly designed for the starbucks drinking a55holes in suites... i wish it would fit a 20oz without making me think it's gonig to crack in half..

+1.

Your going to need to focus on the corners of the bezel. I think I switched from the cutoff wheel to one of those sanding wheels at this point to remove a bit of plastic, test fit, remove a bit more, test fit, etc.

Yes like LSEGUY said, make 2 relief cuts in the top corners where the avic is supposed to come through to slightly bend that top up to give it some more room. I cut mine in all 4 corners and then spray painted the inside lip black so the cuts could not be seen.

Thanks for advice, guys - I'll give that a shot and report back :)

I had to cut ALOT extra off to get mine to fit, just keep cutting and test fitting and it will just barely make it. its a painstaking process.

Im pretty sure you did, is there a way to use it wrong? lol

Well, your advice worked. I made relief cuts at the top and bottom at the back of the faceplate, and with a bit of patience and force, I got it to fit! After all of the hacking I did to the back of the plate, I'm surprised it looks so well on completion :)

Now, I have a new problem. After testing everything and making sure all of the connections are secure, I can't fit the unit into the radio "hole." It seems that, with the aftermarket harness, etc., there's not enough room behind the unit to make it fit. At best, I can only get it within about a half inch of where the frame bolts in. Any advice before I start tearing the dash apart again? How did all of you get the wiring to fit?

Deja vu. Bad memories. :-)

Remember the patience you utilized to get the unit to fit into the faceplate? You'll need a bit of that again.

Its a snug fit, but it WILL work/fit. Before you plug the headunit into the harness, reach in there and tuck away...to the sides, buttom..as much of those wires as you can. Be careful not to pull apart any of your soldered connections, but you want to make sure wires arent excessively crossed or binding, and tuck as much away into the nooks/corners as you can. If I recall, I think there is some space over to the drivers side rear of the hole, and maybe some more space over on the other side. Once you are SURE you have all wires tucked as neatly as possible, go ahead and plug in the Avic. As you push the avic into the opening, use a flashlight to shine above, bottom, and sides of the avic to ensure no wires are getting pinched between the avic and the opening. As lone as no wires are getting pinched, keep on pushing. When you get it in far enough, hand screw the bolts that secure the headunit into the dash. Then going in a rotating fashion, tighten each one with the socket. A little at a time with each one. The avic will slowly go into the dash into the proper position.

Sorry I haven't reported back sooner. I got the headunit installed, but I cheated - after struggling to still get all of the wires hid, I gave up and had my local car stereo shop install it. Here's some pics:

They did a really good job installing it. Plus, despite all of the hacking I had to do to the back of the faceplate, installed it looks perfect. I gave it two coats of paint (from the kit) and it looks completely stock.

Overall, I'm very happy with this unit. For the money, it's hard to beat!

Oh, and for those who are interested, I found some cool backgrounds:

That's the only thing I don't like about my Kenwood HU... I can't upload custom backgrounds. Just very spartan ones, reminicent of Windows 3.1

But the bypass was easy, so I either have a DVD or the navigation on anyways, so no big deal I guess :)
