This Thread for Pioneer AVIC-D3 Installs.

One other note:
While the antenna for the GPS works fine inside the car, the XM antenna really needs to go outside the car. I have mine pushed far forward into the corner of my dash, and I get strong signal around town. But on a highway trip on a 2 lane highway lined with trees on either side (sunny day, but still..) I had numerous dropouts.

Ok i have the bezel and they sent me a paint can to paint it myself, but i want to dremel it first. I took a picture of it can anyone use like microsoft paint to outline the area that needs to be cut out? do i need to take a bracket off the old radio or something? Here are the pictures...

cut around the are of where my yellow drawn line is from the back of the bezel. dont make your cuts on the front side.

could you show me on the back picture? i dont want to cut away anything it needs to be anchored to the car. there are 4 circular clips sticking straight back do i need those?

Yep. Cut all of that out (whats already been stated to cut) then start test fitting. This may take you awhile to get it just right. It's not an exact science.

Ok Guys, got the D3 in, dremmeled out the bezel, test fitted, test fitted some more, and finally got it to fit so its drying from paint right now. I decided im going to do it myself, ive done 3 or 4 regular radios and took a look at the steering wheel control hook up instructions and it doesnt look that bad. So me having nothing better to do and being impatient was thinking about doing it tonight. I have a few questions first...

Where is the best place to put the GPS wire?
Do i need to connect the VSS wire?
When installing the Steeringwheel interface do i need pins around the wires to put them in the vehicles connector?

Any other tips please help i like challenges and this should be fun.

o and here are some pics of it

I never could CONFIRM a VSS wire for my 2002 V8. I tried 3 wires (red white under the rear seat, red/white in a wiring loom just under the brake booster) and nothing. Works 100% perfectly without it connected, even when I was in an underwater tunnel in Norfolk, VA.

I mounted my GPS antenna on top of my 3rd brake light housing..but I've read it works fine on the front dash as well. Or even UNDER the dash.

And you dont need to connect the backup wire unless you are going to use the backup camera. Yeah, I know the manual says otherwise..but trust me.

ok sweet im ready to go then, just got back from buying some connectors so here goes the fun. So i can put the GPS antenna under the dash in the front? i think 02V8Sport did that, on the passenger side if im correct. Ill try it there. Ill put up some pics too.

Yep. Heard the GPS antenna is pretty forgiving and can be placed almost anywhere. The XM and Sirius antennas are a different story.

I also cant say enough about the bluetooth module/feature. I have a Treo650 with Verizon..and NO one can tell Im talking on a car speakerphone when I use it. It's great. Cool to hit the touchscreen, pull up an entry, tap it, and just start a crystal clear conversation via the stereo speakers

And if I recall, I used the scotch locks to connect my PacSw1.

It works fine..there is a slight delay now when you use your steering wheel buttons. Im guessing the delay is the signal now having to go through the Pac Sw1...then over to the headunit where as before the signal went straight from the pac to the stock headunit.

also..I randomly have an issue where the volume buttons on the steering wheel wont respond at all. Then..suddenly they will begin working again after I click through the sources or hit the mute button for a second or...

Got everything all hooked up but one small problem, the "midnight black" paint i was sent w/ the bezel is a little off. Could it be because i painted it over silver? Do i need to add a clear coat? a little help please. I put on 3-4 coats.

IMG_2337.jpg

If you put 3 to 4 coats on it, chances are your paint is not what it's supposed to be. Try painting a dark piece of something... like a back piece of plastic. If it turns out black, then chances are it's the silver on the bezel... though I doubt it unless you gave it some REALLY thin coats.

ok well i finished about an hour ago, the install went ok, could not get the steering wheel controls to program, lseguy what was the color wire that you spliced into with the white wire on the PAC?I tried the one they said and another and it still didnt work. Connector 14 it said, and it was black and green but it said white/black. Oh well ill fix it when i add the bluetooth and have to match that paint. I put another paint on there to darken it a bit but it needs work. I just wanted to finish. It looks good tho and is loaded w/ options! heres some pics

Congrats! Sorry..cant recall which wire I tapped into for the Pac Sw1..but I seem to recall it being the one recommended in the online documentation for the pac. The instructions in the package state to go to their website, because their web info is the most current. Also, make SURE you are tapping into the wire that is in the proper plug. There are 3 plugs..only one of the plugs (factory) has the wire you need, but the same COLOR wire may be present in more than just that plug. So make SURE you are tapping into the proper color wire..on the proper Plug.

I didnt have the bezel color issue that you had, becuase I already had the wood grain. I went to the hobby shop and got some near black plastic model spray and painted the bezel (simply so the parts that werent going to be covered by the wood was not silver) before I applied my wood trim. My woodtrim is slightly darker than the surrounding pieces. Most likely Im going to order 3 new pieces that all match. One for the Climate control, one for the headunit, and one for the upper vents. Then they all will match up. Only place Ive found that will sell individual pieces..in any custom pattern/color you want, is

whom Ive actually used before on my previous LS.

Also..your Avic appears to protrude a bit out of the opening..vs the slightly recessed look that I and 02LSV8 have. (I'll post pics of mine later). Not sure why that is..unless you trimmed a lot of depth from the rear of your bezel? Either way..it's fine.

Ok ya let me see a picture of yours... Thats the way i got it to fit on the brackets on the side while still having the bezel line up, it doest stick out that much, the part behind the screen (part of the cube part that is black) is what i tried to line up, not the screen itself. I guess when i fix the paint and add bluetooth ill try to fix the PAC again, it was just frustrating last night...

I know this thread is kind of old now, but anyway.

My friend just gave me his Pioneer Avic N2 and I am gonna put it in my LS soon. I have couple of questions that I couldn't find the answers to.

1. Where should I put the GPS antenna? if on the dash then how do I get it up there? I have seen it put on the front windshield, on the right lower part, but I haven't looked yet if there is access there.

2. Where should I put the GPS module (the box that is suppose to be horizontally mounted)?

Thanks.

with my D3 i dont have a module, but i did run the gps antenna to the passenger side by the air bag under the dash. I get great reception and havent had any problems yet. I got to it by taking off the panel that shows when you open the passenger door, but you cant see it when its closed. It popped off pretty easily and i was able to run the wire from the headunit behind the glovebox and then mount the gps antenna back there. I dont remember the exact location but i dont think it makes too big a difference.

sorry for bringing up an old thread, i just bought an LS and my previous car i had the avic D3 and i took it out to put it on the LS, before i do so, i wanted to see if anyone else had it ..

Looks sick in an LS, j/w, anyone have it for a 2000 Lincoln LS ?

Not sure when I'm going to install it yet though, it might be until the summer or when it starts getting nice out, its waaaaaay too cold to install haha, my buddy can do it ..

BTW, anyone know how i can bypass it while watching a DVD and drive at the same time? people at circuit city said its a two step process, the E break is one puttin like a switch or something and the other i forgot what they said.

EDIT nvm, i found a car just like mines in page 4, not sure about coloring the frame, i need it to match 100% im a picky person .. haha

Ground the, I think pink wire / E Brake wire, to something metal instead of the Park control.

The Avic D3 bypass is easy, but not as described above. The Pink wire isnt involved at all. The pink wire is the VSS wire, which none of us could locate in a 2002 LS.

For details and pics on the bypass, visit www.avic411.com
