That's right I'm thinking of chopping the cats. So I've got a few questions (yes I searched but I have specific questions). I'll try to keep it short but those of you that know me already know I talk to much :D so here it goes....

Assuming my car is "race only" it will be legal.

After installing a magnaflow dual in/dual out x muffler in place of the third cat & a magnaflow dual exhaust from there out my car is very quiet. It pretty much sounds barely louder than stock which is almost not even heard. I really crave that badass sound again that came from my muscle cars. I don't want it to be obnoxious....just mean sounding. In other words I'm not looking to wake the neighbors, but I am looking for my car to sound like its got balls!

1. If I cut the cats and straight piped it will it be ridiculously loud, or sound like the same level (not tone but decibel level) as a mustang does with just a catback?

2. Will I see a noticable improvement in power?

3. Can my SCT tuner get rid of the CEL? I know usually yes, but I know with our cars some options aren't available on the programmer.

thoughts on this guys?

No real gains from lossing the cats if they are in good working order. Keep the x muffler and go straight pipes from there on out. The cats wont make much difference if you still have at least on muffler. You should be able to turn your rear O2 sensors off. That will stop the CEL if you remove the cats.

1. It will be louder. Ridiculously loud is a matter of opinion

2. Not much.

3. You'll want a tune to turn off the rear O2 sensors.

See but what throws me off is when I eliminated the cats on my 2003 GT it wasn't really that bad. I had BBK longtubes, pypes orh, and a borla (non-stinger) catback. I know different cars have different sounds.

So what is striking my curiosity is if I have an extra muffler in place (my magnaflow dual in dual out x in the middle) wouldn't that mean it will be the same or quieter decibel wise as my GT?

By no means am I trying to argue with you. I'm just trying to logically understand the reasoning.

As for power I bet your right. From previous experience I found the gains from eliminated the cats was the most noticable when paired with long tube headers. So that does make sense.

The sound will not be the same as a mustang. First the marks have a much longer system and more bends to it. That alone with make it sound quieter. Removing all the cats will make it pop when slowing down with high flow mufflers. From what your saying I think you'd be happy with just running the x muffler in the middle. No other cats or mufflers. If thats too much you can always put the rear mufflers back in.

Oh yeah I know the sound will be different than a mustang, I was speaking decibel wise, not tone wise.

That pop is what I love! :D My stang used to do that and I loved it!

This info is helpful...thanks guys.

Anyone else want to chime in and drop your 1 cent (was 2 cents but in this economy it's only worth 1 cent) feel free. ;) :D

OH YEAH!!

My car is 100% straightpiped... and it drones under crusing speeds, but when you kick it down, it sounds like it's going to murder the world. and that is what I like about it. I am however going to do the dual X's and some magnaflows at the rear bumper if/when it gets fixed.

Also, my car is stupid loud under ANY sort of accelleration. I get followed by cops ALLL the time.

My favorite places in the car are:

Underpasses
tunnels
along semi trucks
highways with tall shoulder barriers
WOT at an entrance/exit ramp

Good times...:D

Here's my 95 with 2.5" catback, X, & no mufflers. I loved it, screw the neighbors! The Cats were intact.

WOW that sounds good cadillackman! I want to keep my mufflers because I paid good money for them and they are less than 3 months old. I think I'm going to have the cats cut. If yours sounds like that mufflerless, than mine will most likely sound similar catless with 3 mufflers (center resonator x muffler, and 2 rear mufflers).

Now I need to find some metal shops that buy cats. I heard they pay like $50 for them. I think the cost to sell the cats will offset the cost to have them cutoff my "race-only" vehicle.

True but you are straightpiped. I'm saying maintaining my center maganaflow dual in/dual out muffler, and my 2 rear magnaflow mufflers. So imagine having three mufflers on your system now, would you think it was loud then in your opinion? That's what I'm trying to figure out.

I have no cats, no mufflers. Sound is very aggressive but everyone asks about my setup! I just say "What setup?".

so i have been thinking and i want to take the third cat out and put in an electric cutout. I want it louder but not alln the time. Do you guys think this would work out well or not. Could this be a option for the op also.
