I don't know what to call it. The stuff behind the rear grills that won't let you see the actual speaker. Mine pretty much disinegrated in my hands during comp install. What type of material is it and what would be a good type of replacement for it?

I dont mind looking at pretty speakers but like the covered look better. Looks more uniform.

Would a fabric store have something similiar ya think? I have to get fabric this weekend to re-cover my rear deck panel anyhow. Guess i could check.

I wouldn't use any. The stock grills do a fairly good job at hiding the speakers and I do appreciate someone wanting to go full stealth but your deck kinda ruins any stealth hopes. DD NAV systems are flashy.

The main reason why I don't like them and remove them on any install is that they mute frequencies. 1-5k is the range they usually muffle sound waves at and thats where human ears are most sensitive.
I first noticed this in an F-150 many years ago. I was playing a Sheffield Labs disc that I knew very well and was surprised I couldn't hear the singer inhale between verses like I normally could. After much tweaking a friend of mine (some heard of him, Dave "Fishman" Rivera) told me about the factory black cheese cloth. I removed it and there was the song nuances I was used to. Ever since then I always remove it.
I have even cut it off factory speakers and noticed an improvement in clarity.

i took mine off on purpose because the grills hide it well anyway like bill said, but in the right light and angle you can see through them, and i love the way my infinity 6 1/2 rounds look so i dont mind seeing mine, they look awesome silver behind the black grills.

Hmm, you guys may be swaying me to keep them removed. I'm still learning the new setup so i haven't really had time to pick it apart yet reguarding lost frequencies and such. My ears prob wouldn't even notice.
Laser, you have a valid point in reguards to the "stealth" issue. I'm not sure if it looks tacky for me seeing the speakers or what. But if i decided to do the rears i'd have to do the fronts too cause i like things to match. Almost not worth the trouble.
And jamie, mine are aluminum/silver too, sexy but flashy.

sbacaprice305 A similar material you are looking for is a material sold at any Garden Center. Although it is not a foam material. It is a loosely weaved weed fabric. It is the material used to prevent weed overgrowth.

I know what your talking about. But the rears have a foam like material. The front tweeter covers inner material is similiar to the weed cloth you speak of though.

I had a chance to look at them from different angles this morning and I think i'm going to keep them off. Thanks for the help though guys.

+3 i left mine off when i redid everything a couple years ago. and i love catching glimpses of my carbon fiber speakers through the grilles :D
