Hey all does anyone have a freaking blow apart on a sunroof in a gen 1 stock sunroof. I have had mine out 4-5 times when I first got it my screws were semi stripped I would kit the button and get skip skip skip till I helped it, soo I got a bought a frame. Got it all put back to gether and it sat funny realized I broke the glass frame guide, well got a new one of those and put it in today. Now roof is a bytch to crank went real smooth on the table. and I can not seem to figue how the sliding cover clips in. I put it were I think it should go the only logical place and I pull it close and it gets cockeyed. grr almost ready to take it to a stealership, but figure I know it as much as one of the workers there?

Any one got a blow apart pic

Ping no one has ever worked on a stock sunroof before, Man I pulled my head liner down tonight to see what it seems to be hanging up on. Man road smooth on the table its almost like its his something got a bout 3 inches to close

I don't know if gen1 is that much different from gen2, but if the drive cable ever slips on the motor gear, it's not fun to get back in time. I am on my 3rd roof assy now. First one was from factory and original owner let the metal drip rail behind the glass come off on one side and it got jammed in there. When they opened the roof, it broke where the drive cable goes into the frame (plastic). I replaced the whole thing with a 97 Thunderbird unit. That one worked well until the upper followers got on top of the track somehow and broke off the deflectors on the upper part of the track, at the rear of the glass. Replaced it again with a 98 Mark unit. The other day, the plastic rivets holding the follower to the glass attachment point came apart. I opened it and heard a loud grinding sound. I got lucky with this one as I bolted it together and then spent a good 2.5 hrs trying to get it back in time. I took the motor out and then pressed the close button until the motor stopped and the alignment bumps in the motor were aligned. I then pushed the actuators forward until the rear followers were just above the deflectors. Reinstalled the motor and it works good. It's not perfectly timed, but it's real close. The shade is meant to be bowed downward until it can be removed from the tracks. It will sound like it's cracking and popping, but pull down in the front center just enough to get one side out and you'll be ok. Make for sure the screws holding the drip rail behind the glass are snug, but not overtightened. The plastic holes will strip out. For extra security, clean the area good and put some 5 min epoxy over the screw and the square cutout. I think the gen1 and gen2 moonroof assys are close in design, but I am not sure.

Thanks makes sense, I ended up taking my headliner down, I can manualy push and pull the roof (the gear spins) it travels pretty good till that last 3 inches and its like it hits something. I be damed if I can find it. Going to try today to open all the way and lube the track up big time and have the kids watch as I close it to see if they can see anything. With it running smooth on the table my only thoughts is that it has to be something in the car.

well got it closed finally, at the 3 inches away mark the posts that ride along the side guiding it jump over the frame adjust ment, I had lost one of the rubber boots that go on those posts, I had to grunt lift the post over the frame guide (the side with the rubber boot jumped fine, and got it to close,

Grr just about to weld it closed lol

Almost ready to take it to a stealership, but shoot I have had it out and in 4-6 times changed the frame set the motor timing, I probably know more about the sunroof than a dealer would

I love my moon roof. It was a must have option on my new Mark purchase (back in January) but after seeing all the problems you guys have had I am glad I have an aftermarket roof. Thing works great!

aftermarket is ever worse, wait till you do have problems with it, good luck getting anything to fix it!

mine has been fine for 135k. Well as far as i can tell..Motor is original, all the rails seem to aswell. The only problem i've had with it is a metal rod that connected 1 side to the other held on by a screw on each side (seen when it is in the vent position). During the period were i ran 3 12's it eventually ratteled the screw loose enough to the point were it became disconnected on 1 side. It ratteled really bad when i was listening to music and didnt like to close fully sometimes..I fixed it last week by finding said prob and attaching the rod back on and tightning the screw.

And as laser said, i had to have 1 aswell..Always wanted one.
