SST on LS and MKS

I was test driving the MKS and i noticed when i went to SST mode the car now pushes forward for downshift and then need to downward for upshift. on our LS's to me seems percfect. up means upshift and down means downshift. why is lincoln changing this and also according to motortrend the new 2010 MKZ also has this configuration according to lincoln:

"Further, the MKZ gets a SelectShift Aisin six-speed auto, which not only offers a manual mode (a first for the MKZ) but also lays it out correctly-forward for downshifts, backward for upshifts."

is it me or do you guys find this retarted. im just venting cuz when test driving i could not get out of 1st gear cuz i kept pressing FOWARD and i had to put it back on D5 then i looked down and said " you ID10T" :mad: THIS IS LIKE RE-INVENTING THE WHEEL.

Theoretically, if you're racing it's faster to pull it to you for an up shift than to push it.

That said...

Theoretically if you're making a claim to a couple 100's of a second for a drag slip in an MKS, you've got more wrong with you than most doctors can help!

Most likely the true answer is that's the way volvo did it and we're not spending the money to change it back.
 
Not that it matters much because I won't be buying a MKZ or any other Lincoln until they come up with a real equal replacement to the LS. That said, I'm with you I prefer forward for up-shift and back for down-shift.
 
just need to shift the contactors I would assume. Its an electronic control function not a cabled thing like the older autos
 
I always thought the LS was backwards. I'd rather pull to upshift. I'm learned to drive in vehicles where 1st to 2nd was a pull and 3rd to 4th was a pull. So, under heavy acceleration there are 2 pulls to 1 push in the shifting. 5th was overdrive and therefore doesn't count.

I know there is a name for this layout, but I can't remember what.
 
Pushing away from you to downshift and toward you to upshift seems pretty natural to me. That's how it is on paddle shifters and on the motorbikes I've had. (with the exception of neutral to first gear)

OK, sorry I said MKZ when the topic is MKS.

Thinking it over I guess it does make since although I am ok with the direction of the LS shifting.

The real debate should be that the MKS should be manual and that would probably make us all happy.
 
Here's the 2nd gen pinout at the shift lever connector. Looks like you just need to swap pins 10 and 5. :burnout:

I dunno about first gen but it shouldn't be hard to figure out.

make sure you find the right pins for your car... also, it may be easir to pull the console apart. There are going to be contactors for the SST and then wires conected to those contactors. If you swap those connectors, it may be easier than pulling pins from a harness. I'll call my brother in law and see if I can borrow his pin extractor set and try this out as well. Pete, if you or anyone else gets this done before I do, please do a write up and I'll do the same. It may be a good idea to get ahold of Quick as he is the one who figured out the paddle shifters and may have some knowledge of the electronics that would help.
 
you can make this even simpler - swap the connections at the switches....

when you push the shifter up - you hit a switch that is 'normally closed' and open it.
when you pull the shifter down - you hit a different switch that is 'normally closed' and open it.

if you swap the wiring on the switches - done.
 
seems like Quick and I are agreeing. he said the same thing as my first thoughts. Ok, going out to the garage. I'm bringing a note book, pen and camera for this.

This is what I'm going to try.
 
so the next question is alot of cars have the shifter the way the LS has so you mean to tell me all these cars where wrong. i really have to drive a car that has it the right way and do it with a open mind, and like mose humans i will adapt. lol i guess this is why jet planes down means up nad up means down... lol
 
ok so wiring on the switches is the fail! the wiring goes into the switches. It became much easier imo to change out the wires in the plug. Two of the wires were longer and two were shorter, so it just made more sense. Atleast on a first gen, swap 4 and 9 and then swap 5 and 0 (probably 10, but its marked 0 and its right next to 9) and then enjoy. I took her for a test drive, then a test beating, then more test drive. I love it! I didnt bother swapping the "+" "-" tabs, because that top faceplate seems to be rivited onto the base. not worth messing around with imo.

I was talking to ILLS about this. He prefers the stock forma nd GM makes theirs the same way on the G8. I guess its personal preference and if you really care enough to change it out.
