Did you guys read the horrible things the dealer is supposed to do to get the reimbursement? They have to run some liquid through the engine until it seizes! Poor cars!

The way I understood it was we did not qualify as we have an average OVER 16MPG

Would buyers off the street be able to buy the cars when the motors blown?

What an asinine program....

People driving these "clunkers" are surely going to LOVE the financing and payments for a new car.

HORRAY EARTH!!!!

Correct, it is a silicate solution designed to ensure they don't run. The government wants to ensure that when these 'clunkers' are taken out of service that they will not be able to be put back on the road again by other enterprising individuals.

Clunkers have to be drivable to accept as a trade.

My neighbor just did this with his spare car and got a Nissan Sentra, brand new, with most of the options including the CVT, for about $9,500. Good deal.

yea just what I want to do, trade in my v8 with space for a sardine can......take your clunker plan and jam it!!! Oh and BTW I did get my mark for milage......my 27 highway beats the 9.4 I got with my trans am :)

I gotta tell you that is just wrong.. Most of the time you'll find a car that is neglected but can be brought back to former glory with very little effort and to destroy it is just wrong.. I cant afford car payments (althought repair bills could be the same! :) ) I would like to get my hands on a car with blown motor and put aother one in it for cheap or free...

Anyone out there have a car in fair to good condition and blown motor / trans they want to give up? I'll put it to good use.. I need a new DD as I will be working on my mark soon enough...

I got a clunker letter in the mail with (of all places) my old work ( a Subaru dealer) Wanting to buy my '94 Mustang GT!!!! I couldnt help but belly-laugh when I read it!!

My '94 GT is faaaarrr from a "clunker" It may have 223,000 miles on it, but it will get out on the road and wipe the floor with a LOT of other vehicles out there!!

The government sucks! Trying every way that they can to sell a new car by taking away our old cars!!!

If I ever get a letter from the Gov. or a dealer trying to get me to sell them my '77 Mustang II... then I'll have a :q:q:q:q-fit and write someone a nasty letter!!

I agree, most cars that get scrapped are perfectly usable. However, you gotta remember, the whole idea is to get older cars off the road. To that extent, the program works as it is designed.

The nice part about the program is it's completely optional. I would never partake, and I'm willing to bet nobody here will, but for many people it makes sense.

For what it's worth, when gas hits $5 again (or higher), that Sentra will look a lot nicer. He's gotten 41mpg out of his first tank, and my best tank is 28 (and that's of premium). Considering my lifetime average is 21mpg, an almost 100% increase is fairly significant.

yea but you can't put a price on that v8 power.....I loved my 79 trans am....even with its 9.4mpg of premium, non-A/c hot headder interior in the summer, I loved it!!!!!!!!!! I made a compromise and got the linc cause the T/A needed alot of work..........still have power and with my exhaust has rumble.....a rumble a sentra will never have

Dealers are going to get the cash from the gov and sell the cars with no title. most of the cars will end up in mexico or south america , so now the illegals will come across the border in style

well said!!! Atleast they'll be driving something with size, ya know so when they run into us in our new "earth friendly car" They'll kill us, atleast we won't have to worry about them not having insurance then :shifty:

I wouldnt blame someone if they went with it and saved a lot of money, but I don't like the program.

To me it hurts the poor.
If you can't afford a new car this bill won't help you any.
Plus if have to go to the auto recyclers to get parts to keep your clunker going, there will be less cars to get parts from.
I look at it as another bail out.
Sure the middle class that still have jobs can save some cash.
The whole idea is to give a boost the auto companys again.

Sometimes you'll find domestic dealers matching the cash- so it's a $9k rebate on an economy car... I wonder if you can find a car and do an even trade?

Strange.....some of you guys said it quoted your car as 18mpg. My 97 came up as 19mpg according to that site. Guess I don't have to worry about Gen II's disappearing. I guess the government finally settled the score on which is the better mark ;)
