So... I'm on the edge of my seat..

From what I understand these are fairly good cars, the only thing I think you might have to worry about is the fact that its an import so once things need replacing it isn't going to be cheap. $1800 seems like a steal for one of these cars, so I would thoroughly inspect it before making any big decisions. A while back I saw a Jaguar XJ12 for only like $3000 and I was seriously considering it, but it was like 200 miles from me and someone else bought it before I could see if I could make it up there.

Well it's pretty much an LS soo...

I wouldn't say it's a steal, more of a money pit.

jaguars and land rovers are cars you should stay away from, aside from Ford influence on them, people buying them have fat wallets that they don't care.

take it if you have a fat wallet.

Not exactly a classic or collectible. And, I wouldn't take it without driving it.

However, if you are close enough and the guy wants to deal, draft an agreement (offer) to sell/purchase, take it back to your garage and fix the ignition. If it works, it's a good car. If it doesn't, pull your parts and return it.

I have had several Jaguars and yes they're expensive. But, they are intended to be maintained and enjoyed. Working on it is part of the enjoyment. But the S-Type is more similar to the LS. The maintenance should be very similar. And, the problems as well.

Good luck!

well there are a couple of ways that you can look at it.

when i bought my LS, I only paid 25% of what my car cost new, with how much I've spent in maintenance, I couldn't imagine how much work really needs to be done on a car that cost 5% of what it did new...

if it was really worth a lot more, he would repair it and sell it for a lot more.

do you really believe he thinks the reason the car won't start is because of a relay? nobody would ever try to sell a car that aint running because of a $5 part, even at crackhead prices, its 100 times easier to sell a car that runs and can be driven home...

honesty, unless you're planning to part it out like he kinda recommends, I would run, far and fast away!

Off subject but... JUMP or run? Cuz I'm about to take out $1500 And go buy this tomorrow. Any advice is highly appreciated because I don't know alot about these other than the fact that I love them and so do many LS owners.

The LS is built on the same platform/chassis. A good mechanic could determine why it won't start & the cost of repair. If both repair cost & selling price is low KBB price than it might be a good buy. Get it started, drive it than complete the purchase, with the seller reimbursing you for the start up repair if you don't purchase. Get everything down in writing, signed & dated by both parties before purchase. How are you going to move it to get it repaired?

Didn't grab the S type. However I think I'm going to buy this. Be a fun little project for me to get acquainted with a first gen. If he takes $900, I'll be buying it. Assuming the suspension isn't shot. Do a cooling system overhaul for about $400 in parts and with fingers crossed.. Brace myself for COPS, hydraulic fan failure, and tranny issues.

Figure it'd be something for me to go play with when I need to escape. Hopefully it's as cosmetically clean as he says it is.

Oh yeah, and prepare for tensioner failure. If this car has overheated many times, I'm sure the plastic tensioner pieces are brittle.

Sounds like a plan! I don't know how bad cars from Michigan are, but I've certainly seen some rusted up cars here in NJ. I live by the ocean too so I get the salt from the roads and it's in the air. most of the cars I've seen real bad were stored at peoples ocean front summer homes for a while. Luckily I live far enough away that it doesn't affect my cars as bad. At least at $900 you wouldn't be that much invested if things start to go wrong and it starts costing lots of $$$$$$$$$. :D

bad

although as every city is broke and doesn't have the money for salt, it seems to not be quite as bad.

however with the LS, there is a lot more aluminum than other cars so major rust problems dont seem to really be a huge issue.
