'SNL' Palin 'Incest' Skit Angers Viewers

Viewers, Bloggers Think Skit Went Over Line

POSTED: 11:30 am EDT September 22, 2008
UPDATED: 12:14 pm EDT September 22, 2008

For the second week in a row, NBC's "Saturday Night Live" has taken to lampooning Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin -- but this time, it has angered conservative viewers over a skit that suggests that the Alaska governor's husband, Todd Palin, was having sex with the couple's daughters.

In the skit, show guest host James Franco plays an assignment editor at the New York Times at the head of an editorial meeting. During a mock assignment meeting where the paper announced that 50 reporters were being sent to look for dirt on Sarah Palin, a Times "reporter" asks, "What about the husband? You know he's doing those daughters. I mean, come on. It's Alaska."

In response, Franco's character said, "He very well could be. Admittedly, there is no evidence of that, but on the other hand, there is no convincing evidence to the contrary. And these are just some of the lingering questions about Gov. Palin."

The conservative-based news Web site World Net Daily (wnd.com) said that while the skit appeared to mock out of touch left-leaning reporters in New York and their lack of knowledge about Alaska, conservative viewers didn't find the bit funny.

"It is time the Palin family brought out the big guns. They need to sue General Electric, NBC, 'Saturday Night Live,'" Florida resident Al Barrs told the Web site. "This is clearly criminal and defamation of character of an entire family and state. All the above needs to be taken to their knees big time once and for all."

A conservative blogger on the site Eon.com also ripped into "Saturday Night Live," saying the children of any candidate should be off-limits.

"Accusing Todd Palin of incest is unconscionable," blogger Rudytooty wrote. "I don't think a joke about (Joe's Biden's wife) Jill Biden doing her sons would go over too well. How about Barack Obama doing his daughters?

Assessing the post, Rudy Tooty added, "Just typing that creeps me out. I feel I should apologize to Obama and Mrs. Biden. It's so disgusting and so unfair."

On the flip side of the argument, WorldNetDaily reported, some viewers think that the viewers offended by the skit are missing the point.

"Anyone that watched Saturday's show and believed the skit in which it was suggested that there was incest in the Palin household needs to have (his) head examined," Ana Jimenez told World Net Daily. "The purpose of the joke (tacky and crude as it was, I did not care for it at all by the way) was to show how out of touch journalists are -- not an attack on the Palin household. Sheesh, get a grip!"

The "Saturday Night Live" skit ended by noting the "reporter" Howland Gwathmey Moss, V, was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 2009 "for his Times series on unproven, yet un-disproven incest in the Palin family. Sadly, he was to die 3 months later, run over by a snow machine, driven by a polar bear."

The final shot showed an image of a New York Times "headlines," which included, "While No Direct Evidence of Incest in Palin Family Emerges, Counter Evidence Remains Agonizingly Elusive" and "In a Small Alaska Town, Doubts Still Linger."

In the show's season opener last week, former "Saturday Night Live" cast member and head writer Tina Fey won raves for her impression of Sarah Palin.

You must have never seen SNL before. They always rip on celebrities. Sarah Palin is a new celebrity. I find the skit funny as hell, just from your description.

Quit yer cherry picking already, straw man. Go count your money. :D

Funny, I've never seen SNL make incest jokes about Obama and his daughters. Wonder what would happen if they did.

And if the joke is so funny, why is NBC scrubbing links to the video?

FWIW, Tina Fey admitted she doesn't want Palin in the VP mansion in January. Biased much?

Oh, and just for you:

[ ]Funny
[x]Not funny

People would probably laugh. But they were more making fun of Alaska than they were Palin.

Thanks to freedom she can be as biased as she wants to be. Hell, I'd rather see her in a playboy spread than in the white house too!

And of course it's not funny to you. I've never seen you have a sense of humor. :D

It sounds like a funny idea, poking fun at the out of touch MSM and their hatred for all things conservative, but joking about the kids at all may be a bit much, at least on SNL...

SNL – this is sort of their ilk these days if something is funny, like the Palin/Hillary opening last week, then let’s take it further. But, it is within their rights to do so. If they had gone against Obama, and his kids – it would be getting the same media attention as this is. This is getting a lot… just run a search on it.

You voice your distaste by calling, writing, protesting NBC or GE. Call their sponsors, tell them that you won’t buy their products if they continue to support this type of TV. You have rights too – exercise them, otherwise they disappear…

This is freedom of speech – some may think at it’s worst, but there aren’t any laws that grade freedom of speech (or if something is funny or not). You have to take the bad, along with the good. Otherwise it doesn’t work.

The opening sketch was overtly political as well, and it's widely recognized that DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE and SNL Alumni Al Franken came up with the idea and helped write it.

In it, it had John McCain approving absolutely outrageous and absurd attack ads directed at Obama. Obama was portrayed as old and senile, thinking things like "8-track cassette" was cutting edge.

I got a chuckle just reading that.

Franken is running for U.S. Senate here its the main reason for me to go vote...to keep this clown out of office.

Local story on SNL skit

Cabriolo, in what decade wasn't SNL 'overtly political?' If I watch SNL I expect certain things - but I don't expect political correctness.

It does sound funny to me - I'll have to find it on line... the Obama 8-track thing.

Oh, Happy B'day!!!!!:)

I think it would be hysterical if they had Obama sitting on a porch showing his daughters how to cut up a few lines of cocaine with his old birth certificate. Of course they should show him taking a bong hit, saying earh as he passes it on to the kiddies. Even funnier if he blows smoke rings that say HOPE and CHANGE. Taking a swig of some Colt 45 and slapping his bitch would put the skit over the top. Now that would be funny.

NBC and SNL, 'F' you!

If you're implying the SNL skit was racist towards Palin, you'd have to prove that "Alaskans" are a racial group. Good luck.

BTW, the correct racial stereotype vs blacks in regards to drug use is crack cocaine.

wow im glad i dont come in this forum lol. who cares what was said, who said, when it was said, my wife is like this, she listens and cares about everything that goes on around us, i dont care about anything, i have enough to worry about myself let along what people are saying and doing on tv. does it really bother some of you that snl did this skit about palin? who the hell cares, its not like she is your mom, or aunt, or sister. she's a broad running for VP get over it. people make fun of bush 8 million times a day, david letterman does every night ( moments in presidential speeches ) i love it, make fun of all of them, too many people are too uptight in this world, what the hell ever happend to having a laugh.

Mr monster - sell it to Fox...

Oh, sorry, Calabrio - my dictionary knows 'Cabriolo' (Spanish to romp or prance) - but it doesn't know Calabrio... I'll do better:)

I thought I was retelling Obama's life story.

He admits to snorting it, not smoking it.

And yes he was a pot-head and no I don't know if Colt 45 is his favorite beer.

And he claims he is not a Muslim but where does he go to get his hair cut?

Face it. The skit was mean-spirited and was not intended to be funny. It was just a cheap shot on a woman, ripping on her husband because he is more of a man than anybody could find in New York City with a population of 10 million. Picking on her kids when the Messiah pleaded with the media to keep the kids out of it is a disgrace.

Don't let the Politics door hit you in the rear on the way out.

As far as whining and moaning, you do enough of that already outside of this forum. I really hate when people drop in to tell us that they really don't want to drop in.

You want to live your life with your head in the sand, by all means, do it. Have fun while you're at it.

I agree, like arguing politics is somehow below arguing about who provides the best after-market chip or car part.

EDIT: Post #2000. It took me one year to get 1500 posts, and the last three years to get to 2000. And to think I used to be one of the top ten posters here once upon a time. Now I'm just a has-been .... :)

Haha...well you certainly need to make up for lost time pal...but you're well on your way now. :D Just don't go away, I like reading your comments.

And don't feel bad - I thought I might rule the forum one day, but have you seen Rich's post count? I don't stand a chance.

too many people are too uptight in this world, what the hell ever happend to having a laugh.

I will agree with that statement.

Especially in this forum, it is very easy for people to lose their sense of humor and take things too seriously. At that point ego's get offended and it can turn into a pissing contest.

I know I've been guilty of that a few times...
